Hey everybody! Pretty much, I want to pursue a career as an Ob/Gyn. I'm going to Hampton and I'm majoring in biology. Should I have chosen a different major like nursing or pre-med :-k
hey girl. Well actually it really doesn't matter. Since you wanna be a doctor you know you can pretty much major in anything you want and still go to med-school. I want to be a pediatrician and I'm majoring in Biology even tho my school does offer a pre-med program. I kno at my school the Biology and Pre-med courses are mostly the same..give or take a few. If you think you'd be better off in the Pre-med program, then I say go for that, but to me Pre-med and Biology are all the same.lol I'd suggest talking to your advisor @ Hampton to see what their Biology and Pre-Med core curriculum standards are.

I want to be an obgyn also. My major is biology/pre med. I'm attending Xavier so i can only tell you about Xavier. They say that if you want to be a doctor you should go biology/pre med. If you want to be a science teacher go biology, but this is at Xavier so a dont know. At Hampton they might not even have a biology/pre med major. Just talk to your advisor, they should know what is best.
You can major in just about anything. What I suggest that you do, is take a look at a few medical school programs online and see what their prereq's are. From this you'll get the gist of what classes outside of your major you should take. Off top I can tell you physics, organic and inorganic chem are a must because those are topics covered on the MCAT. My major is psychology, but I've taken classes in biology, chemistry, and physics(this semester). Maybe you should schedule an appointment with a pre-med advisor, just to inquire about what classes you will need even though you're not on the bio/pre-med track. Hope this helps.
My line sister wants to be a doctor and is a Biology/Pre Med major. If u can, get in Biology and Pre Med just in case u dont want to pursue a career as a doctor. Thats why i chose Criminal Justice and Paralegal Studies for law school as opposed to our Poli Sci /Pre Law track so i can do other things. But Chemistry is also good for Med school and they give lots of scholarships for that. Im sure u can major in Physics and still do somethin with the Med field. As long as its a science
I got some good info on med school at www.BlackPeople.us (see my signature) I have been out of school for 4 or 5 years and I want to go back and get another bachelor's in biology for med school. I think Biology is best because it gives you credit for all of the prereqs for med school and prepares you for scientific study which is the most rigorous aspect of the first 2 years of med school... all that scientific studying... but it's work that adds up to a wonderful career in something good for the world so I don't mind.
There's also Chemistry
