Unite through music? Posted on 09-08-2005

I'm sitting watching the concert before the football game and I'm noticing that the whole crowd is into Kanye's performance and into Maroon 5's performance. Thinking back to years ago, black and white people partied to the same music whether it was Rock & Roll of the 50s or the Motown sound of the 60s. Do you think people will ever come back to that point where everyone will listen to the same things like that?

Not as long as major record labels and whiny soccer moms are allowed to dictate the type of music that mainstream society listens to.

To some extent it already is, because commercial hip-hop is mainstream. Now if you mean music that's more of a shared experience across cultural lines, you have jazz, blues, neosoul, gospel, and alternative music that attracts people of all backgrounds, although it's not mainstream. Holla
