So Im a Senior in highschool and I was in class one day just chillen and talking with a student teacher about my college plans...So I was talking about Hampton and Spelman and this boy asks, "Can only black professors teach at black colleges" and I was like "no" and my student teacher says "yes" at the same time...
...Its so weird because its like NO ONE is educated about black colleges. Black colleges doesnt mean that ONLY black students get in and ONLY black professors teach there right? Well thats what I explained to them. That would be segregation.
I just explained to them its just kind of like that because the schools were meant for black students in the beginning since whites wouldn't allow blacks in the schools and as time progressed they started to embrace their culture but it is not necessarily just for black students and no other race...hence the word "Historically Black"...as in History...as in the past.
Am I right or wrong...maybe it is all black teachers but I wouldnt think so.
No, Black colleges, from my perspective, don't have to have all black teachers and don't even have all black students. I believe that the majority college and hbcu's are inversly related because while one black college may have 5% non-african-american students a majority white college may have 5% or less african-american students. As far as teachers go, there are teachers and administration of all different races at black colleges.
There was definitely a lack of knowledge of HBCU's at my highschool. Matter of fact, I hadn't even heard fo black schools until Drumline. :???: . I know. None of my teachers of counselors mentioned the option. It wasn't till my dad suggested it that I applied to Hampton. I think people are always gonna have this image in their heads about what an HBCU;s about. Nothing you can do about that.

Well there was something I could say...I educated them...because they were ignorant to the whole Black College thing....they truly didnt know...I just thought that was crazy
L0L girl I have this problem all the time... the only people who know what HBCU's are at my school are the C0unselors ... the students and teachers d0nt know what they are at all maybe 1 out of 200 students may know what an HBCU is at my school ... and when I eXpalin to them what it is they aut0maticaly assume I am trying to get AWAY fr0m white people lol then they start asking Crazy questions.
As long as I've lived in Nebraska(since 9th grade, off and on) nothing has ever been mentioned about any HBCUs. This year(senior year) out of all the college discussions we had, it seemed as if all other schools were mentioned except HBCUs. My school is predominantly white and the only black kids who really know anything about black schools are the ones from the South. That's how it is in Nebraska. No one is aware of how life is OUTSIDE Nebraska and the sad thing is that they are not interested in learning.
that just proves the point that HBCU's aren't discussed od they even care about them? thats the question me persoanlly having a rich tradition of family memebers who attended HBCUs so i did and do know of them i also live in an area where there is just two HBCUs alone and not too far away couple of others and its sad that the guy never heard of them until DRUMLINE? wow that goes to show u black universities arent discussed enough in schools i remeber watch ing the COSBY SHOW how it portrayed a black educated family and Different World how it portrayed an HBCU Hillman College tho its didnt exist forreal tho some of you thought it did it was a portrayal of a HBCU come on whether u live in a small town like ropart indianna or a big city like chicago if you are black u should know about ya people that to me is just common ground and i think that these teacheaz out hea should be ashamed talkingabout only black teachaz can teach at black universities please!! thats coming from a college graduate? wow redo her application forreal
HBCUs are known and thanks to the NAACP HBCU confederacy and the BCC they are being financially supported along with some other organization it kills me when people mention sometihng about blacks like we are some national geographic creature just found or they act like were some dinosaurs some old exhibit in a museum that we need to have little sayings about us and who we are WE black people should speak loud enough for ourselves our history is just as important as the American its 2006 and peoples mind frames are still clueless omg only u kno mm well u were right for letting them kno the truth and keep letting them kno if they ask contiue to be proud to be black and tell the blacks like u who dont have a clue to go to a HBCU if they havent already chosen a college it will give them a depth about who they are and where they come from and they will see it has teachers and students of all kinds

Hmm, well, when I was a senior in HS, I had decided to apply to a few HBCUs. However, I think I only applied to HBCUs because of Drumline, lol. If it hadn't been for that movie, I probably would have gone to some big PWI.
I grew up watching A Different World when I was younger, but seeing as how there was no show around 2002-2003 that would have peaked my interest in HBCUs, Drumline was a saving grace. Unfortunately, my school is NOTHING like Drumline. Smh, I was hoodwinked dammit, but I still love my jacked up HBCU.
Ah, and as far as HS teachers & counselors, I went to a predominantly white HS and my 11th grade AP history teacher was asking me why I wanted to go to an HBCU and suggesting that I do not because to him it wasn't a reflection of the real world. And it's Interesting, I'm one of the few students from North Jersey (besides Newark) that I hear of going to an HBCU. Students are just uneducated in their options AND their history.
