Job Description
Associate Instructional Designer
The goal of this position is to contribute to creating high-quality, meaningful online learning experiences for Ohio State students and to support instructors in making a transition to online teaching as part of broader University goal of advancing teaching excellence across modes of delivery. In the context of emergency remote teaching, many instructors have found themselves rapidly preparing classes, including high-enrollment, high-impact undergraduate classes, for online offering. This position will be part of a support effort to provide consultation, professional learning, technology tools, and other aid to those instructors during the 2020-2021 school year.

The position will primarily work with instructional designers and Ohio State faculty members--with support and supervision from senior team members--to brainstorm, plan, and create, and maintain high-quality, accessible instructional multimedia objects, including interactive branching activities, simulated experiences, and games or activities that allow for authentic practice of knowledge and skills. The planning and execution of these interactive media projects will be based on evidence-based principles of multimedia learning, instructional design, online pedagogy, and effective college teaching. This individual will demonstrate excellent communication and collaboration with faculty in planning and brainstorm sessions and will use agile project management principles to co-facilitate collaborative development projects. This role will involve management of numerous projects in collaboration with individual instructional designer teammates under the supervision of the instructional media lead and in coordination with other educational technology and multimedia teammates.

The individual in this role will also help to develop templates for storyboards and re-usable learning assets, creating and incorporating high standards of web accessibility as well as graphic design and ODEE or program-specific branding. This person will also assist in the research and testing of new technology tools and techniques to continually add to the team’s possibilities and options for both in-house produced and faculty-created multimedia learning objects. This role also participates in the creation of resources, tutorials, and trainings for faculty and staff in the use of video, multimedia, and other interactive tools in instruction.

This role will contribute to other educational-technology work and initiatives, including those related to video, audio, virtual reality, new LMS capabilities, and other online platforms and technologies, as well as other duties as assigned. This individual will engage in professional development and networking at the university and externally to learn and share ideas related to instructional multimedia.

This is a one-year term position as part of a grant dedicated to supporting large undergraduate courses in their transition to online instruction this 2020-21 school year, in collaboration with the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, which is posting its own positions related to this initiative. At the end of the term, there is a potential for future roles in the Office of Distance Education and eLearning as part of its core work of supporting the development of online courses and programs.

Qualifications & Requirements
Required: Bachelor’s degree with 1 or more years’ experience teaching, or in a role directly supporting instruction, at a higher-education institution

• Familiarity with evidence-based principles of college teaching and the backward-design approach to planning instruction: ability to describe basics and formulate appropriate questions related to those topics;

• Experience with the setup and facilitation of courses or learning activities through a learning management system (e.g., Carmen/Canvas)

Desired: Master’s degree with one or more years’ experience in a higher-education institution or high school (grades 9-12) setting in a role related to instructional design, curriculum development, or direct engagement with faculty in the design and delivery of technology-enhanced courses

• Experience evaluating or remediating instructional materials based on digital accessibility considerations in the context of college teaching;

• Experience with formal academic program assessment of student learning based on curricular outcomes as well as other techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction (e.g., peer review of teaching, pre- and post-program student assessments, student capstones or degree-long portfolios)

• One or more years’ experience teaching or directly supporting instruction in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subject area at the college level

• Experience with social science research
