Public Service Assistant/Associate Coastal Economics Specialist
The University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant program seeks a Coastal Economics Specialist with broad interest in marine and coastal resource economics, policy, and management. This position will provide statewide leadership and coordination for developing, maintaining, and evaluating a comprehensive coastal economics extension and applied research program that serves Georgia. Primary targeted audiences include, but are not limited to, commercial and recreational fishermen, marine aquaculture operators, state and federal resource managers, seafood dealers, other coastal and marine-dependent industries and trade organizations, local governments, and interested public. Information provided to these groups will support industry-related and resource management decisions that promote the sustainable use and conservation of Georgia’s coastal and marine resources. This is a full time, benefits eligible, non-tenured Public Service Faculty track position. This position is based in Brunswick, Georgia with travel to other locations as needed. Considerable local and regional travel will be required to ensure the most critical needs of the programmatic area are met.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements
A M.S. degree in natural resources, agricultural or applied economics; business, finance, marine/coastal policy or related field is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred
• PhD in natural resources, agricultural or applied economics; business, finance, marine/coastal policy, or related field.
• At least one year of experience working with maritime-related industries, resource managers and/or policy and decision makers.
• Training in natural resource and environmental economics, and fundamental knowledge of coastal and marine issues.
• Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding and lead applied research efforts.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment and develop productive partnerships and collaborations with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
• Capacity to conduct community-engaged scholarship with diverse audiences through research and outreach activities.
• Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, particularly as it pertains to interpreting and translating research-based technical information for the understanding and use by decision makers, practitioners, and the general public.

Major Responsibilities
• Design and implement applied economic research projects of importance to stakeholder groups including, but not limited to, commercial and recreational fisheries management, tourism, coastal hazards, aquaculture production, seafood product marketing and development, community planning, coastal zone policy and management, working waterfronts and other coastal-dependent businesses, and/or environmental and natural resource management.
• Document the economic benefits of major coastal and marine industry sectors in Georgia and integrate economic and social and/or environmental data to assess their vulnerabilities to current and proposed resource management strategies and regulations.
• Conduct economic analyses of land-use and economic development impacts on coastal and marine resources and ecosystems, and analyze policies designed to promote the adaptation of coastal communities while becoming more resilient to climate change, sea-level rise and/or other coastal hazards.
• Provide technical assistance and outreach on coastal and marine economic-related topics to industry constituents, agency officials, community leaders, legislators, and other relevant stakeholder groups through consultations, workshops and seminars and develop educational materials to support the communication and dissemination of developed content.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff at the University of Georgia and other institutions to conduct applied research and extension projects
• Secure and manage extramural funding to support coastal and marine economic research and extension initiatives.
• Represent Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant at community events, professional meetings, collaborative working groups and partnerships with other organizations in the field of coastal and marine economics.
