Sequoias Community College District is seeking candidates who are qualified and equity-minded to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Ethnic Studies Department beginning August 2026.

Teaching assignments may include evening classes and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District Campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

*College of the Sequoias offers lecture-lab pay parity, as well as overload and large lecture compensation that may be additional.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will:
  1. Use a comparative Ethnic Studies approach to teach face-to-face sections of "Introduction to Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies." Other class assignments may include Ethnic Studies courses in subfield(s) of specialization (Black American Studies, American Indian Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Asian American Studies).
    1. Instruct day and evening classes on two or more of the Sequoias Community College District sites, including the Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare campus.
    2. Use mixed learning and teaching methods appropriate for community college students.
    3. Assess student performance and progress through different types of course assignments.
    4. Perform related teaching duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities related to enrollment, attendance, and student drops.
    5. Refer students to appropriate support services, programs, and/or resources as needed.
    6. Contribute to the development and growth of the Ethnic Studies Department and to the growth of its Associate Degree for Transfer.
    7. Regularly collaborate with Ethnic Studies faculty to assess and revise measurable student learning outcomes as needed for each course.
    8. Collaborate on department initiatives, program review, program and student learning outcomes development and assessment to improve student learning.
    9. Commit to continuous faculty professional learning through opportunities such as trainings, workshops, conferences, serving on district committees, and community involvement.
    10. Perform other professional responsibilities, including holding regular student office hours, participating in department/ division meetings, and creating, participating in, and sustaining an atmosphere of social justice that is respectful of diversity districtwide.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must meet the following criteria.
  1. Master's in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies; OR
    1. Master's in the Ethnic Studies field; OR
    2. The equivalent (Established via the COS equivalency process, see note below.)

JOB REQUIRED CORE SYSTEM COMPETENCY

The candidate must also demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students pursuant to Title 5 53022.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Ethnic Studies Department is looking for the following:
  • Proven capacity to teach Ethnic Studies and subfield courses with an antiracist and culturally responsive approach with students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underserved and non-traditional students.
  • Specialization in American Indian Studies and/or another subfield of Ethnic Studies.
  • Commitment to create positive race conscious intellectual spaces and provide support for students of color, womxn, LGBTQIA+ and historically marginalized groups, through teaching and advocacy.
  • Evidence of community organizing and ongoing pedagogical and professional dedication to anti-racism, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
  • Preparedness to serve on campus committees to enhance collective accountability as educators and as an institution of higher education and to engage in practices for closing equity gaps.
  • Engagement in the reframing of inequities as a problem of institutional practice and access while working collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community members to enhance student and institutional success.

Note: Applicants who have completed college or university course work at an institution outside of the United States that is not a post-secondary institution accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the US Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts, degrees, and other relevant documents by either NACES or AICE.
    5. Equivalency documents (if necessary)
    6. Two (2) recent letters of recommendation addressing pertinent experience or equivalent competencies. If submitting confidential recommendation letters from a third party, please have letters emailed to normach@cos.edu. Please do not submit a reference list in lieu of letters of recommendations.
