ABOUT THE POSITION
Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one full-time tenure DSPS Counselor - Specialization in Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This assignment also includes curriculum development, participation in the shared governance process through work in normal professional activities, committee work, and student activities. The Counselor is expected to develop curriculum and participate in new student workshops, classroom presentations, outreach activities, evening assignments, and provide referrals for students to other services and agencies. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. RESPONSIBLITIES:

Apply DSPS policies and procedures, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, requirements pertaining to compliance with section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act for website accessibility and Electronic and information (EIT), Title 5 and California Education Code Regulations and federal and state law as related to access issues in a community college setting.
Determine eligibility for DSPS office through direct evaluation, by observation, or from careful review of documentation presented, as well as training in the proper use of various assessment techniques.
Provide culturally responsive, disability-conscious counseling to students with a specialization of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students, including academic, career, and personal counseling delivered in direct, fluent ASL when appropriate.
Evaluate functional limitations, skills and abilities of students to design and implement appropriate disability-related accommodations and recommend the use of appropriate communication access accommodations.
Implement adaptive/assistive technology services that facilitate access to electronic information and educational programs for students with various disabilities with an emphasis on Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students.
Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, and departments on Deaf culture, communication etiquette, and best practices for working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
Participate in outreach activities, new student orientations, transition events, workshops, and resource fairs to support DHH student enrollment and retention.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications item 1 or items 2 & 4 or items 3 & 4 or the equivalent
1. Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling
OR2. Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling,
OR
3. A Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling AND possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT),
AND
4. Either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, OR completion of six semester units, OR the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a postsecondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, OR two years of fulltime experience, OR the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

Counseling for students with disabilities

Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities,

OR
the equivalent.

Candidates who possess a combination of education and professional experience that is equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit a Supplemental Equivalency Application (Download PDF reader) in addition to all other required materials.

All candidates must demonstrate
Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desirable Qualifications

Demonstrates fluency and accuracy in American Sign Language (ASL), along with a strong understanding of the cultural and social issues impacting the Deaf community.
Knowledge of communication access accommodations including ASL interpreting, captioning/CART, assistive listening devices, and tactile interpreting and have ability to determine appropriate accommodations based on functional limitations and communication preferences.
Knowledge of accessible technology for DHH students, including captioned media, FM/DM systems, speech-to-text applications, and classroom alerting technologies.
Understanding of language acquisition considerations for Deaf students, including ASL/English bilingual development, reading/writing support, and compensatory learning strategies.
Comprehensive knowledge of academic, psychological, and social factors affecting Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
Knowledge of academic environments and how different educational settings affect the placement, support needs, and success of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
A minimum of two (2) years of experience-or equivalent-in providing direct support services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students within an educational setting.
Ability to provide instructional support to students with disabilities, particularly Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, in one or more of the following areas: reading/spelling, writing, mathematics, compensatory strategies; and proficiency in integrating computer technology into teaching and learning.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid California Driver's License
