ABOUT THE POSITION

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenured General Counselor commencing with the Fall 2026 semester. The primary assignment involves providing personal, career, and academic counseling to students. The Counselor is expected to provide support for students through their life cycle at the college including the areas of connection, entry, progress and completion. Interventions shall include activities such as supporting the matriculation process, classroom presentations, outreach activities, evening and weekend assignments, early alert, completion efforts, and providing referrals for students to other services and agencies. The counselor will also provide leadership in areas of student intervention strategies, working with academically challenged students, and teaching counseling, career, and orientation courses. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trades, Technology, and Community Learning campus or other college teaching locations. This assignment also includes participation in department, division, and college committees, and assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development. The assignment maybe days, evenings, weekends, on-line or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
  • the equivalent
  • (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

All candidates must demonstrate

Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience delivering academic, career, and/or personal counseling in a California community college, including SEP development and support for disproportionately impacted students.
  • Experience in designing, developing workshops, presentations, and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with computer technology, social media, and web-based technology, particularly related to academic counseling in a community college setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and coordinating programs or services at a Community College
  • Ability to communicate effectively in another language relevant to the LBCC community, with fluency in Spanish and/or Khmer preferred to support our diverse student populations
  • Ability to administer, use, and interpret various career assessments (e.g., True Colors, MyMajor, MBTI, Holland Codes, career values inventories) and to help students determine their career paths.
  • Evidence of active engagement in campus committee work and college service, demonstrating commitment to shared governance and institutional development.
  • Ability to provide culturally relevant interventions and support to disproportionately impacted students who may be at risk of academic or progress probation
  • Experience implementing Guided Pathways, including caseload management, milestone tracking, and cross-functional coordination.
