Job Description
RESEARCH ASST I (Student/Work Study)

Job Summary

The bacteria Streptococcus mutans is the main cause of dental caries, which impact billions of people worldwide. Students in Dr. Emily Lavering's lab will have the opportunity to work on a project studying S. mutans. Project options include searching for bacteriophage that could be used as preventative method for S. mutans infections, or studying aspects of the bacteria's biofilm.

Responsibilities*

  • Learn and practice sterile techniques
  • Culture bacteria (in both solid and liquid media)
  • Measure bacterial growth using optical densities
  • Learn various bacteriophage techniques 
  • Perform biofilm assays
  • Help develop new research methods
  • Write a paper or make a poster clearly communicating results
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a UM-Flint undergraduate student.
  • Students must have availability on Tuesday and or Thursday afternoons. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a biology or chemistry lab course. 

Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan
