Job Description Summary

Cuesta College is seeking a Full-Time Tenure Track Addiction Studies, Social Work & Human Services (ASHS) Instructor to teach and provide leadership starting the Fall 2026 semester. The successful candidate may have teaching assignments at various College campuses including the California Men's Colony state prison. The candidate will also have additional College and departmental responsibilities as outlined below.

POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to the responsibilities of the faculty classification description, the specific position is also responsible for:
  • Teaching within the discipline and degree programs in Addiction Studies, Social Work & Human Services, and teaching a broad range of courses within the discipline, such as an Introduction to Human Services; Families and Addiction; Families, Relationships & Intimacy; and Life Management.
  • Prioritizing student success and efforts, including student mentoring.
  • Establishing and maintaining a course schedule, in collaboration with the Division Chair and the FT ASHS faculty, which effectively promotes the program while maximizing efficiency, with consideration for non-addiction studies ASHS courses
  • Maintaining and improving the course rotation for Addiction Studies courses with consideration given to campus, time, and rotation.
  • Helping coordinate California Men's Colony (CMC) course rotation and collaboration with the Rising Scholars Program.
  • Attending meetings with Cuesta College's academic counselors to inform them about updates to the Addiction Treatment Studies Program and Degree, the Human Services Degree and Certificates, and the Social Work Associate Degree for Transfer.
  • Developing and promoting the ATS Program with student club members as an ATS Club Advisor, through event participation/information tables at community events related to prevention and awareness.
  • Meeting with directors of community Addiction Treatment Agencies to determine appropriate partnerships for education and practicum/fieldwork placement; meet with academic advisors from high schools in our area to promote the ATS Program.
  • Contributing to the community through service on Substance Use Disorder Prevention and Education advisory boards, including other mental health services organizations.
  • Participating on Health Workforce Initiative Behavioral and Mental Health Subcommittee when appropriate to further the program.
  • Maintaining collaboration with community colleges who are also named as educational partners in grants for Substance Use Disorder Counselor workforce development; communicate with potential state and national partners who are interested in naming Cuesta an ATS educational partner.
  • Applying and overseeing funding through HWI/Strong Workforce or other grants to facilitate events and student CCAPP conference attendance; attend the annual CCAPP conference and facilitate student attendance (if funding can be secured).
  • Communicating with the approved state agencies (and their board members if necessary) about program registration, renewal, course modifications, certification, and student advocacy when necessary.
  • Collaborating with faculty, outside agencies, and other industry professionals to ensure student success for those who are enrolling/enrolled in the Cuesta ATS Program through various grants in which the Cuesta College ATS Program is named as an educational partner.
  • Serving on the ATS Scholarship Committee and/or participating in meetings to support grant funded ATS Scholarships.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty colleagues in other disciplines and College staff within student success and support services, such as academic counselors and coaching, internship/job developers and Guide Pathway coordinators.

Representative Duties:

The full-time college instructor is responsible for effective performance in the following areas:

A. Teaching and Instruction

The following duties are representative of the kinds of expectations that are normally required of a full-time Cuesta College instructor. Certain duties are common to the everyday operational needs of the College while other activities may be required on an as needed basis. All of the duties, however, are common requirements at various times for full-time instructional positions.
  • Plans for and initiates curriculum improvements.
  • Plans for and is continually well prepared to teach.
  • Provides organized delivery of instruction.
  • Meets guidelines for Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) for Distance Education (DE) courses.
  • Is courteous to and approachable by students.
  • Remains consistent with the stated and approved goals and content of the course.
  • Adheres to the subject matter of the course as outlined in the Course Outline of Record.
  • Shows enthusiasm for the subject matter.
  • Uses effective motivation to create a personal desire to learn the subject/skill(s).
  • Uses standards of student evaluation that are clear, equitable, and followed consistently throughout the course.
  • Requires levels of instructor and student effort sufficient to the mastery of the subject or skills in the course.
  • Grades and returns student assignments and tests in a reasonable and faculty determined period of time as stipulated on syllabi.
  • Selects appropriate course materials, including resources at low cost or no cost to students.
  • Makes effective use of teaching aids and materials required of students (e.g., texts, manuals, low-cost, Open Access, etc.).
  • Prepares and completes course outlines and equity-minded syllabi.
  • Continually revises and updates course content and materials of instruction.
  • Coordinates course contents and methods with other teachers in the program/discipline.
  • Meets and assists students during office hours or by appointment or at other reasonable times.
  • Initiates and carries through with improvements to course contents and methods.
  • Initiates and/or participates in overall department-wide program development, maintenance, evaluation, revision and/or expansion.
  • Identifies and connects students with college services and resources.

B. College and Departmental Responsibilities - College and/or Departmental responsibilities may include the following activities:
  • Organizing and co-leading the ASHS Department.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Maintaining collegial, professional, racially aware, and ethical conduct.
  • Regularly submitting assessment results into the college outcomes and assessments database.
  • Developing and updating student learning outcomes, courses, and course/program curriculum.
  • Serving on college committees and taskforces (Participatory Governance).
  • Writing program reviews and assessing Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Serving on peer evaluation and hiring committees.
  • Collaborating with Division Chairs on course scheduling.
  • Working collaboratively with full-time and part-time instructors in the department.
  • Organizing and co-leading the ASHS Advisory Committee, including collaborating with community about curriculum changes, job opportunities, or scholarship opportunities for students.
  • Achieving and maintaining Cuesta College Distance Education certification.


C. Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Teacher - Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has demonstrated:
  • Commitment to staying current with the latest developments in ASHS.
  • The ability to continuously reflect on, evaluate, and improve teaching methods.
  • The ability to organize and explain content in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning styles.
  • Implementation of critical pedagogy (i.e., support students to actively engage in their own learning processes, promote development of critical thinking skills, and encourage students to become lifelong learners).
  • The ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and reflect cultural sensitivity.
  • The ability to actively engage students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds.
  • The ability to develop student learning outcomes and methods for assessing students' achievement of those outcomes.
  • The enthusiasm for, understanding of, and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college.
  • Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology, including effective and meaningful online instruction.
  • A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college

The main campus is located along scenic Highway 1, west of San Luis Obispo and east of the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. To be considered for the Addiction Studies, Social Work and Human Services discipline:

Required:

-Any Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;

OR

-Any Associate's degree from an accredited institution and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;

OR

-The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. For directions on what is an acceptable equivalency argument please review the requirements listed on the HR Website or see further information on Equivalency Petition Process Information below.)

OR

-A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).

Also Required:

-Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable:

-Teaching experience in the discipline, community college level preferred;

-Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of California Community Colleges.

Candidates who also meet the Counseling and/or Psychology minimum qualifications may be assigned coursework within the Movement and Health Sciences Division, according to the below qualifications:

To be Considered for the Counseling discipline:

-Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, from an accredited institution;

OR

-A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in one of the listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);

OR

-The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. For directions on what is an acceptable equivalency argument please review the requirements listed on the HR Website or see further information on Equivalency Petition Process Information below.)

OR

-A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).

To be considered for the Psychology discipline:

Required:

-Master's in psychology from an accredited institution;

OR

-Bachelor's in psychology AND Master's in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work from an accredited institution;

Interview Process Information

Selected applicants will be invited to give a teaching demonstration, and an interview on Friday, April 3, 2026.

First Interviews will be held in person or via Zoom by candidate request. In person interviews are preferred and, in the interest of equity, candidates will be reimbursed up to $500 toward their travel expenses if they choose to interview on campus. Virtual teaching and lab demonstrations will be evaluated using the same criteria as in-person demonstrations and will be expected to facilitate similar levels of effectiveness, skill, engagement and interaction.

Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Friday, April 10, 2026.

The selected applicant will begin their full-time teaching assignment in the Fall semester of the 2026-2027 school year, which begins on Monday, August 17, 2026.
