Head of Communications Overview Founded in 1900, National Cathedral School (NCS) is an independent college-preparatory, Episcopal day school for girls Grades 4-12. Steeped in tradition and a strong belief in the power of young women, the education at NCS is designed to capture students' curiosity and fuel their academic, artistic, athletic, and personal growth. NCS expresses the philosophy of the Washington National Cathedral and Episcopal Church while embracing the core values of excellence, service, courage, and conscience. NCS is directed by a Governing Board composed of parents, alumnae and other friends of the school. The Governing Board entrusts the administration of the school to the Head of School. Primary responsibility for the well-being of the school rests with the Board. The Position The Head of Communications will lead and manage the communications that support all aspects of NCS. Reporting to the Head of School and serving on the senior administrative team, the Head of Communications will be responsible for stewarding meaningful and mission-aligned interactions with key constituencies both internally and externally, with a particular focus on current families, prospective families, alumnae, and donors. This individual will provide leadership for the Communications office and work in concert with the team members in the Enrollment Management Office, the Development Office, and the Academic Leadership Team. They will be responsible for providing trend data and progress reports related to school satisfaction surveys and other key communications metrics to the senior administrative team and Board of Trustees. This individual will oversee the execution of a comprehensive communications strategy and action plan that achieves the goals articulated by the Head of School. They will understand internal, peer, and market forces and assess opportunities and threats, ensuring that the NCS brand, reputation, and market position remain strong and mission aligned. This individual is expected to be collaborative, strategic, execution-oriented, creative, metrics-driven, professional and excellent at maintaining confidentiality. Strong written and oral skills are required. An ability to listen and understand audience needs is critical. A data-driven mindset is expected. Responsibilities: Uphold the standards set to maintain NCS's strong reputation and brand guidelines. Manage and effectively provide strategic direction to team members in the Communications Office. This includes reviewing roles and responsibilities for greatest effectiveness and impact. Work in concert with the Admissions and Development Offices to execute approved strategies and plans. In partnership with the Head of School, help to define and articulate key messages for NCS at large and for major strategic initiatives, and cascade these messages to the appropriate constituencies through appropriate communication channels. Identify, support, and promote speaking opportunities for the Head of School and other NCS leaders. Develop processes and procedures to capture day-in-the-life activities at NCS and disseminate them through appropriate channels and to the appropriate constituencies. Build strong working relationships with counterparts at St. Albans, Beauvoir and the National Cathedral and determine processes for optimal coordination opportunities. Collaborate with communication and technology colleagues, assess and evolve digital strategy and channels, including website, social media, video usage, email communication, internal portals and newsletters. Support admission efforts addressing student composition, and evolve practices based on benchmarks, trends and new innovations. Support communication efforts by providing reviews, drafting content as needed (particularly should a crisis arise) and maintaining a school-wide communication calendar with a focus on quality, relevance, and timeliness. Support development efforts and campaign goals with a focus on developing strong connections with NCS alumnae and current and past families. Build strong parent relationships across the lifecycle from prospective parents to current parents to past parents to understand needs and connections to the school. This includes participating in Parent Association meetings and supporting parent involvement and volunteerism. Participate actively in the life of the school by attending events, exploring classrooms, and contributing to the spirit and culture of the school. Track and report metrics on marketing and communications initiatives, demonstrating progress on an ongoing basis. Identify any potential marketing and communications threats early and work to close gaps. Be available to the Head of School to support new initiatives, advise on matters affecting key constituencies and respond to crisis situations. Attend Board meetings as needed to report on strategic initiatives. Serve as primary liaison with communications vendors such as crisis communication firms, digital marketing agencies, and website vendors. Understand the strategic impacts the enrollment, communications and development functions will have on the culture and future success of NCS, including pride and connectedness to the institution, and articulate them with the senior administrative team, faculty, and staff. Qualifications and Personal Attributes Qualified candidates will hold at minimum a bachelor's degree. They will have experience within an educational Community and/or bring deep functional experience from another industry that can be seamlessly transferred to education. Salary and Benefits The full time salary for this position is $150,000-$180,0000. The exact salary is determined based on education and experience. Benefits available include medical, dental, life insurance, a retirement plan with a school contribution, free parking or transit benefits, and lunch without charge, as well as support for professional development experiences. Additional stipends are available for coaching middle or upper school sports.
