Day - 08 Hour (United States of America)Medical Interpretation & Translation Summer Internship Stanford Health Care | Office of Patient Experience Paid * Eight Week Program * Summer Term Program Overview Stanford Health Care's Medical Interpretation & Translation Summer Internship is a paid, eight-week program for students pursuing careers in medical interpretation and translation. Hosted by the Office of Patient Experience, this internship provides hands on exposure to professional medical interpreting and translating in a nationally recognized academic healthcare setting. Interns are hired as temporary, non-benefitted Stanford Health Care employees and work alongside experienced staff interpreters delivering language services that support safe, equitable, and patient centered care. What You'll Do Interns participate in a structured, progressive learning experience that includes: * Medical interpretation practice in real clinical settings * Exposure to complex medical terminology across specialty clinics and hospital services * Observation and shadowing of seasoned medical interpreters * Supervised and solo interpreting as skills develop * Participation in medical translation projects * One on one feedback and mentorship from multiple staff interpreters * Exposure to simultaneous interpretation Clinical Settings Interns may work in a wide range of hospital and clinical environments, including: * Emergency Department * In patient units * Transplant clinics * Cancer Center * Psychiatry * Procedure areas * Specialty outpatient clinics Program Structure Weeks 1-2 (Full time, 5 days/week): * HR and departmental onboarding * Virtual new employee orientation * Medical interpreting training * Technology and workflow training * Structured shadowing with staff interpreters Weeks 3-8 (4 days/week): * Supervised interpreting * Solo interpreting opportunities * Independent study * Translation projects * One designated day off per week Translation Experience Interns' complete translation projects that may include: * Inpatient and outpatient medical documents * Development of a personal medical glossary * Feedback from translation mentors * Independent study to deepen medical knowledge Skills You'll Develop By the end of the internship, participants gain experience in: * Multiple interpreting roles (conduit, clarifier, cultural broker, advocate) * Professional medical terminology usage * Healthcare protocols, including HIPAA and patient safety * Post session debriefing and professional reflection * Working effectively in fast paced clinical environments Mentorship & Support The internship is led by a highly experienced interpretation team with over 50 combined years of medical interpreting experience. Interns receive consistent guidance, feedback, and support throughout the program.
