Post Baccalaureate Research Assistant Chemistry

POSITION SUMMARY

The MacInnes Lab seeks a highly motivated recent graduate or graduating senior for a one-year postbaccalaureate research position. Our work focuses on developing and fabricating electrically conductive surfaces that selectively bind metal ions in aqueous environments for use as electrochemical sensors to detect metal pollutants. This project will build skills in electrochemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, surface chemistry, and thinPostking about environmental applications within these areas. Through this experience, you will develop deep expertise in electrochemical analysis and surface chemistry modifications, take ownership of the project, and have the freedom to shape its direction. You will also have the opportunity to present at a national or international conference with the goal of producing a first-author publication by year's end.

This position is an ideal opportunity to build skills and experience before entering graduate school or a career in research. You will be recognized as a senior member of the lab and entrusted with mentoring junior researchers and contributing to general lab operations.

*Minimal travel required. This role may involve 1–2 overnight trips per year, typically ranging from 2–3 days in duration, for activities such as presenting work at conferences or visiting project collaborators.

*One-year term – 2080 hours; Benefits eligible role.

Regularly review relevant scientific literature to stay informed and ensure work remains grounded in up-to-date knowledge.
  • Data Management & Record Keeping: Collect, analyze, and carefully document all experimental data, maintaining thorough and accurate records of procedures and results throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Scientific Communication & Dissemination: Present research findings to peer audiences at relevant conferences and lead the writing and preparation of manuscripts for publication at appropriate stages of the project.
  • Collaboration & Lab Communication: Communicate effectively with all lab members and liaise with external collaborators as needed, fostering a cooperative and productive research environment.
  • Lab Leadership & Mentorship: Take an active leadership role within the lab by mentoring and supervising student researchers, providing training on laboratory methods, techniques, instrument usage, and safety protocols, and supporting their understanding of the underlying scientific theory and principles.
  • Lab Operations & Safety: Maintain a safe and well-organized working environment, assist with routine lab upkeep, including restocking supplies and maintaining instruments and equipment, and manage the procurement of chemicals and materials as needed.
  • Supervisor & Researcher Check-ins: Meet weekly with researcher to discuss experimental data, progress updates, and plans for the week ahead.
