The position is responsible for development and maintenance of an organization wide Physical Environment (formally Environment of Care) program. Under general supervision of the Vice President of Operations, ensures organizational compliance with external regulators and accrediting entities. Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the Physical Environment as well as Emergency Preparedness. Interprets and ensures compliance with UMMC policies, quality standards, regulations and codes. Will chair the Physical Environment Committee by directing ongoing and hospital-wide collection of information about deficiencies and opportunities for improvement in the environment. Develop, implement and manage safety programs and policies and procedures for all areas of environment of care (safety, security, hazardous materials and waste, medical equipment and utilities management) in collaboration with responsible department managers.

Core Responsibilities:

Monitor testing and inspection requirements, including service contracts where applicable, for regulatory compliance.

Organize training/education for all employees to comply with accreditation requirements.

Review and/or revise the Physical Environment management plans annually.

Ensures that the safety program meets current requirements by maintaining current competence in safety certification.

Promote and assist in coordination of the emergency preparedness function of the hospital. This includes response to both internal and external events, actual or exercise. Investigate, research and make recommendations regarding best practices with respect to emergency preparedness.

Conduct an annual review and/or revision of the hospitals Hazard Vulnerability Analysis.

Perform all other duties as assigned.



Work Experience

Education Requirements and Experience:

Bachelors degree in Business, Emergency Management, Nursing, Healthcare Administration or other relevant fields of study is required; Masters Degree preferred.

5 years of directly related experience required

Must possess a background in Safety Management (required for regular interaction with governing and regulatory agencies).

Must have highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external personnel.

Self-motivated to achieve goals in a timely manner, be able to handle tasks autonomously and possess a strong organizational skills.

Must be able to maintain sensitivity to confidentiality information.

Must have the ability to develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with other employees, patients, and their families as well as the general public, across all age groups and populations.
