"I know two, One was a lady who was so black there was no brown in her skin, and I had a student a few years ago who was the same color. Put black cloth next to them, and you couldn't tell the difference. The woman's grandson was black too and fine as he could be.
so that actually made three."
I am special because I still believe that what ever I want to do is possible. I like whom I have become and enjoyed most of the trip to get here. I am semi-retired and plan to fully retire in a few months. I have been in education for 40 + years. I have taught French, Spanish, history and English. I have taught everybody from elementary school to adults. I came through the separate but equal era, through the trials of integration, and this era of post integration. I first attended the University of Kansas and quickly realized that I needed to be some place else. I transfered to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Ok., and graduated with two degrees. I have been to Egypt, Greece, and Mexico and all of the states in the U.S. except seven. I have one son and three grand children. I have written a book of poetry, and I am in the process of writing a novel. I like to do many thing, and I am always looking for new things to do and to experience. As a teacher, I believe that I have made a sizeable impact on my community. I tried to instill a strong desire in my students to strive for the best and not be deterred by obstacles placed before them. I also tried to help them see their own value as a person and to be a proud person of color regardless of what the community at large said about them. I found that teaching them our proud history is the key, and once my students learned their history, that made all the difference. As a professor at an HBCU, I am still on the crusade of opening eyes and minds to develop their potential and not to give up because the road gets a little rocky or filled with potholds. I grew up in an all Black town where we were taught that what ever we wanted to achieve, was posible. Successful role models were all around me; therefore, it was easy to believe that anything was possible. My parents, Mother and Father, never told me that I could not achieve anything regardless of how far reaching the dream. Those values stayed with me and I tried to pass them on to my students through the years. Many of them have made me proud.

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”

If I were banned from the US, I would probably go to an island in the SouthPacific, Fiji or Bora Bora.
