About   (request update)
I was born under special circumstances that have fueled my motivation to achieve excellence. My father was incarcerated 4 months prior to my birth and was sentenced to seven years. As a result, I grew up in a single parent home, however, my father's family held a large presence in my life to supplement his absence. My aunt(my father's sister) has told me that I learned to read at the age of 2, and that the first thing she heard me read was a road sign on a trip to visit my father in prison. I have always excelled in school, and the absence of my father drove this passion to succeed. I entered the mentally gifted program in the 1st grade and remained in the program until I entered private school in the 6th grade. I was referred to a scholarship program in the 4th grade by my teacher called the Steppingstone Scholars' Program. After being accepted, I was then accepted to the Agnes Irwin School. This school was a culture shock at first considering that I was not only a minority in race, but also a minority in religion, as I am a practicing Muslim. I learned to adjust, and have been at my school since 2003. During this time, my father had been released from prison, only to re-enter twice since his initial release. I never allowed the problems with my father to affect my work ethic, because I recognize the importance of education and the advances offered in receiving a superior education compared to those around me. Once I entered high school, I found my real passion within my school and that was promoting issues of diversity in my community. I was able to join the Black Student Union, Model UN, Multicultural Board as well as other clubs that raised awareness about diverse issues. It is my hope that I can continue this passion of raising awareness as well as promoting the betterment of diversity in the future.
