Shade Y. Adu
Shade Yaa-Birago Adu was born July 14, 1988 to Kwadwo and Polly Adu. Ms. Adu is an Irvington, NJ native and the youngest daughter of seven children. In 2002, she became an alumna of Union Avenue Middle School. While at Union, her leadership skills developed with active participation in Student Council, Junior Honor Society, Sigma Rhoer Club. Ms. Adu was also the recipient of the “Principal’s Award”. After graduating from Union, Shade Adu attended Marylawn of the Oranges Academy in South Orange, NJ. She remained active in the Student Council, Drill Team, Campus Ministries, Computer Club and was the salutatorian of her graduating class.
In 2006, Ms. Adu was accepted to Morgan State University where she continued to pursue a legacy of excellence. Shade was a member of the Benjamin Quarles Historical Society, Student Government Association, Pre-Alumni Council, Leading Ladies, NAACP-MSU section, and the Inter-Residence Council. Ms. Adu is also a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated serving as the outgoing president of the Beta Tau Chapter. Ms. Adu also maintains an active schedule of community involvement and has worked closely with Habitat for Humanity, Why Women Cry Conference, Read Across Northwood Elementary school reading initiative, and MSU Kwanza Celebration. Ms. Adu graduated magna cum laude from Morgan State University with a Bachelors of Arts in History on May 15, 2010.
Ms. Adu has received several awards and recognitions throughout her academic career at Morgan State University. She is a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar and Ambassador receiving up to ten years of college funding, named Sigma of the Year 2010, Outstanding Morgan Women in Academics in 2008 and 2009, Outstanding Morgan Freshmen 2006, Outstanding Undergraduate of the Year, the Ronald McConnell History Award for the graduating history major with the highest GPA, and member of three collegiate honor societies. She also was the esteemed recipient of the “President’s Second Mile Award” as the graduating student who has gone the second mile during her matriculation.
In May 2011, Ms. Adu graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA with a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education Social Studies. Upon graduation, Ms. Adu accepted a position with the Department of Education of Kazakhstan to teach at the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools in the state capital of Astana.

Claim To Fame:
An article about my experience in Kazakhstan was published on BlackExpat.com. I was also interviewed by international teacher recruitment agency "Teachanywhere". I also participated in an interview about my experiences on public access television in my hometown of Irvington, NJ, last month. Most Memorable Moment:
One of my most memorable college moments was becoming a member of the illustrious Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. Eeeyip!
