About   (request update)
With a reputation of putting her whole heart into her work and passion as a community organizer, youth advocate and human service professional, Katrina Brooks lives her vision and belief that every child in Baltimore City should have a caring adult in their lives. Katrina Brooks is a Baltimore native with more than ten years of service to children and families of Baltimore City. A graduate of Lincoln University with a master’s degree in Human Service and a concentration in counseling, Katrina works with youth and their families to create a web of community and family supports that foster healthy adolescent development and transition to healthy adulthood. As a former community school coordinator and member of several citywide initiatives, Katrina brings a wealth of grassroots knowledge, personal and professional passion, and insight into her position as Community Relations Director/Youth Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Center for Adolescent Health.
At the Center for Adolescent Health Katrina’s most significant contributions are in restructuring the Youth Advisory Committee to better serve the Center’s Community-based Participatory Research efforts in East Baltimore. Her support of the Center’s Community Advisory Board of organizational partners helps members share a close relationship with the Center through Katrina’s efforts in applying transparency and mutually beneficial collaboration so that partners feel supported in their individual efforts and valued in the collaboration with Johns Hopkins. She represents the Johns Hopkins Center through Baltimore City and nationally among Prevention Research Centers throughout the United States.
Bringing a systems approach to community schools, Katrina successfully ran the community school office of Violetville Elementary Middle School under the leadership of HOPE worldwide for two a half years, gleaning partnerships and building networks that still support the school today. She coordinated an action committee that successfully petitioned the school system and led to the first new public school construction in over ten years in Baltimore City.
Prior to her work in City Schools and Johns Hopkins, Katrina served as a full-time AmeriCorps fellow, serving during Hurricane Katrina, an experience which changed her life. Her joys include time with her husband, Paul and three beautiful children, Chinyra (23), Maya (15) and Jordan (10). She is the Sunday School Superintendent at her church, and avid reader and journal writer, daughter, friend and sister. In her spare time, Katrina loves to spend time in volunteer efforts with her Youth Advisory Committee.
