About   (request update)
A degree in the hands of an African American female from Detroit, Michigan is not a document with printed words rather a document that holds the opportunity to escape. It is the moment for her to leave and redefine the definition of the stereotypical black young woman. It is a chance for her to live, to follow her dreams, and to make a change in this society. For her the document not only holds her accomplishments of graduating but the hope of providing a better life for her family. My name is Olivia Haynes and I am a resident of Detroit, Michigan which has been ranked number six as the most dangerous environment to live in the United States. With the odds and statistics stacked against me I have surpassed what many young ladies of my time have not. It is because of the guidance and the foundation that had been laid years ago that I am able to withstand the obstacles many women have crumbled against. Since pre-school I was taught the education comes first. My family has made sure that I understood my priorities, first is God, my mother kept me rooted in a Baptist Church. Education came second, above family and friends. My mother understood that education was fundamental and a necessity her daughter would receive. I attended Bates Academy where I received an education that would prepare me for high school in every way possible. In September of 2009 I was enrolled in Cass Technical High School where I am ranked in the top ten percent of my graduating class. I am a part of various activities such as Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, JROTC’s Raiders Team, Trio Upward Bound, DAPCEP, Pep Club, Weapons of Worship Mime Ministry, National Honors Society and the Merit Program. Along with this load I am the Class Secretary of my graduating class and the personal assistant to my principal Mrs. Lisa Phillips. I believe that being well-rounded is essential to success which is why I dabble in everything I can. From the fine arts to intense cadet training, from tutoring my peers to displaying my love for Christ through mime, from hardcore studying to making sure everything remains in order. For me high school is only a stepping stone in my success, a stone that many have stopped at but one I intend on using to push me to higher level. I am an aspiring doctor with the concrete understanding that this career will require time and dedication without cease. Eleven years of mandatory education, four years of undergraduate, four years of medical school, and three years of residency, a mountain of work but worthwhile in the end. On the outside looking inward everything seems well put together. However, beneath the surface lies a girl who has worked harder than most of her peers just to compete. I can recall the long nights I have spent doing homework or being tutored by my older sibling Felicia. I have always had to remain one step ahead of the game in order to not fall behind. I have worked tediously and I am only beginning to reap the benefits. I have become a young lady that is not only grounded in herself but God as well. Always seeking Him first in the decisions I make and remaining strong in faith. With this mindset and an inconceivable support system I am granted success. But most importantly, when I stand before God at the end of my time here on earth, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left; just so I can be able to quote Erma Bomebeck "I used everything you gave me". I will use every ounce of energy God has given me to its maximum capacity to fulfill my purpose. Who knows, an African American eighteen year old young woman from Detroit can be the difference in the field of Medicine.
