About   (request update)
My name is Jawan Burwell. I am 18 years old and was born to Hattie and Henry Burwell on September 2, 1993. I graduated high school from Richlands last year in June of 2011. I decided to further my education and I’m currently enrolled at a Historical Black College, as a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. When I first started college, I declared my major as Business Management, but as I thought about it, it was not something I thought I would really like to do. Three weeks past and I decided I wanted to pursue and obtain my degree in Child Development and Family Studies. With this degree, I plan to open my own childcare center, not only to assist families with child care, but to give children a place to come and be in a warm and friendly atmosphere, where they can do homework, get tutoring and social skills training. Children are a very important aspect of my life. My course of study in school will enable me to get a better understanding and learn many the different phases children go through. I have found that many African American males do not choose child care as a career and is something they do not wish to do, but I actually enjoy working with children. Patience is the key trait you must have. My summer internships for two years with Children, Youth, and Teen Programs, I feel honored that young people look up to me and that in a small way I make a difference in their lives.
Before I left home to go to college, I held membership at Harrison Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Richlands, NC. I served as the YPD President, youth choir President, dance ministry President, Sunday school secretary, junior Sunday school teacher, and sing in both the gospel and combined choir. Since I go to school in Greensboro, which is three hours away from my home, I still attend my home church as often as possible and visit Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greensboro, N.C. I also attend a weekly bible study at my school every Sunday night. Serving God and helping to uplift the building of his kingdom are two of the main priorities in my life. I will use my skills I gained in school to help bring souls to Christ and become a role model for the youth in the A.M.E church. Many young people today are either on drugs, in jail, or dead. My goal is to provide a positive influence on them as I continue to lead the youth of the church through teaching song and dance. My favorite bible verse comes from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” With God all things are possible and you must believe and have faith that he will do what he said he would do!
Family is the most important thing in my life. I would not be the person I am today if it was not for my family. My parents, grandparents, brothers, uncles, and aunts have been my major support system throughout my entire life. When I need of help, need an encouraging word, a laugh, or when I am down, they are the ones I turn to. I have a close family network that includes my cousins that also carry on family traditions that were established by my great, great grandparents. My family does and continues to do for me. Most of all my family decided a long time ago to serve the most high God.
