I feel like choosing an HBCU for college, as a an African American, is something that should come as a no-brainer. Historically Black Colleges and Universities produce black excellence. HBCUs produce some of the most successful black people in the nation. HBCUs represent only 3% of American institutions of higher learning, but they graduate nearly 25% of all African Americans who earn Bachelor’s degrees. Statistics aside, I will be attending an HBCU in the fall because on no other type of campus will I get the feeling that being on a HBCU campus will give me. An HBCU is where the whole campus is for me and my prosperity, and not just one class or one club. An HBCU is where it is Black History Month every month. This feeling is something that I cannot wait to experience.
Attending and graduating from Howard University will open so many doors for me. An ambitious, aspiring Public Relations Specialist, at one of the most prestigious HBCUs, in the nation’s capital is a recipe for success. When I dream of my future, I can see myself working and socializing with HBCU alumni. I plan to use everything that Howard will teach me to my advantage so that I, like many HBCU alumnus, will be successful in the professional world.
HBCUs can be undervalued and sometimes underfunded, but they are more than productive. When I think of HBCUs, I think of the many men and women who fought so that I could attend one to get a higher education. I would be selfish to not continue the legacy and pass it on to the many generations to come.
