Al Cunningham has been working as a community-based journalist and cultural activist since sixth grade in Chicago’s BRONZEVILLE. His careers have included news and feature reporter, urban planner, communication/media specialist/director, writer and producer for radio syndication, public information officer, sexual health educator, social services administrator, and multimedia creator. Work has lured him from the south side of Chicago to Atlanta, Alabama, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Washington, DC, Bay Area, New Jersey/New York, and currently, Detroit. Al’s latest creative pursuits include a book-in-progress, OVERCOMING AMERICA: Resisting Racism In the 21st Century; curating and archiving media from his AIDS/HIV career; and studying psychedelic therapy as a means to reduce Black trauma.

Claim To Fame:
First Talladega student to intern for a semester as a reporter at the Anniston Star, in the city which was the site of civil rights violence in the 80s.
Most Memorable Moment:
Performance by FUNKADELIC; visits by historian Dr. John Hope Franklin, jazz piano master Teddy Wilson (alum).
