About   (request update)
Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) Communication’s Office has appointed Alonda Thomas as the new director of media relations. Thomas brings a decade of experience in media strategy and entertainment public relations to the position.
“She has strong leadership and communications skills and will be an asset to the office and to the university, said Sharon Saunders, executive assistant to the president for communications and the university’s chief communications officer.
Thomas previously served as senior publicist at The FrontPage Firm where she led various publicity campaigns for television shows, including “Welcome to Sweetie Pies” on the Oprah Winfrey Network and “LisaRaye: The Real McCoy” on TV One. Thomas worked closely with the firm’s celebrity client roster to secure media coverage for executives such as political analyst Roland Martin, journalist Kevin Frazier and film producer T.D. Jakes.
“It is an honor to come back home to FAMU and serve at the institution that prepared me for my career,” Thomas said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues on campus and within the media to promote the great things taking place every day.”
Thomas began her career as communications specialist at North Carolina Central University where she was responsible for developing news releases and founded the university’s first student recruitment performance ensemble, The NCCU Spirit. She later served on the corporate communications team at Edelman in Atlanta where she supported the B2B, real estate and sustainability practices. In 2008, Thomas moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment PR. Her leap of faith landed her a position at the prestigious Creative Artists Agency where she coordinated speaking engagements for the A-list roster of actors and producers, including Sidney Poitier, Anthony Zuiker, Geena Davis and John Lithgow. Thomas then accepted a position as media and publicity coordinator for Sander/Moses Productions where she supported the final season of the hit CBS show, “Ghost Whisperer.”
Thomas received her baccalaureate degree in public relations from FAMU in 2001 and a master’s degree in integrated marketing and management communications from Florida State University in 2005, where she was a university fellow. Through the years Thomas has held several positions in the FAMU National Alumni Association; most recently serving as president of the FAMU NAA Southern California Chapter.

Claim To Fame:
Alonda Thomas is the author of the book It’s Okay To Wait: A Father / Daughter Conversation, a book designed to help parents take the mystery out of “the talk.” The picture depicts the story of a father who sits down with his adolescent daughter to have a discussion on sex. Through his well-earned life lessons and faith principles he describes some of the stumbling blocks she may encounter on the road to love. Sensing that she can speak honestly to her dad without being judged, the daughter reveals her concerns and asks questions about dating, love and marriage. This revealing glimpse into an intimate conversation between a parent and child will educate the young and inspire the young-at-heart. “It isn’t easy to talk to kids about sex, but it is necessary,” said Thomas, who wrote the book in response to the advanced sexual awareness of today’s youth. “I hope this book will be a useful tool to help start an open dialogue between parents and teens about relationships, self-esteem and discernment.” Although many people traditionally imagine mothers will talk about sex with their daughters, Thomas decided to have a father lead the conversation in her new book as a tribute to the important role a father plays in the development of a young woman’s perception of herself and men. “Alonda Thomas has written a powerful book that will change the way young women approach relationships and how they communicate with their parents,” said actor DB Woodside. “As a new father myself, I want my daughter to know she can talk to me about anything and I look forward to sharing ‘It’s Okay To Wait’ with her when the time comes.” It’s Okay To Wait: A Father / Daughter Conversation (AuthorHouse, $17.99) is illustrated by A. Emmanuel and is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble web sites. For more information, please visit www.ItsOkayToWait.com.
