Q&A With Venessa Roy

(interview me)
Venessa Roy
Firefighter II, Charlotte Fire Department

Location: Charlotte, NC United States
Joined: Sep 10th, 2013
About   (request update)
Venessa Roy was born on Ft. Bragg Army Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina on October 10, 1985. She was born to Linda Roy who was enlisted in the Army at the time. In 1989 her family would be complete with the addition of her father James, who was also serving in the Army. Growing up as an only child for 13 years, she would finally be introduced to her little sister Jessica in 1998. Venessa’s family grew once more when she was finally introduced to her younger brother Steven in 2005, who is just a year younger. She and Steven have the same biological father. Brought up as an Army Brat, Venessa found herself moving around a lot between NC, SC, GA, NY, MA, KS, and Germany twice. The military lifestyle greatly contributed to her love of travel along with her fascination with other countries & cultures. Growing up Venessa was always very active and athletic, commonly referred to as a tomboy. Basketball and softball were her sports of choice as she entered her second high school in Junction City, KS. Later she focused solely on softball as she went into college at Barton County Community College where she also received her Associates of Science degree. After attending BCCC for two years, Johnson C. Smith University became Venessa’s new home. She played softball and volleyball for the Golden Bulls, later graduating from JCSU in 2008 with a B.S. (Accounting) & B.A. (Economics). After graduation, she took the reigns as the Assistant Softball Coach at JCSU, teaching and sharing her love for the game. Unfortunately like most college students, Venessa hadn’t quite figured out what she wanted to do next. Although she earned two business degrees, she found herself taking a chance at something most would never think of. In 2009 after an intense hiring process, Venessa became a member of the Charlotte Fire Dept, servicing the city she decided to call home. In 2010, she became the first minority female to be hired by the department in the operations division in nearly two decades. Fast-forward to 2013, she decided to take another chance. For years Venessa secretly wrote poetry, it happened to be the only way she was able to release and cope with whatever life had thrown her. Her curiosity along with encouraging words led her to the decision of sharing her words with the world. She finally realized that although she felt alone in her thoughts, everyone else could relate to the poems she wrote and felt her words in their own way. Due to the overwhelming response and support Venessa has received in 6 months, she is strongly considering a second book. Only time will tell what will come next for this young woman and her open mind as her free spirit continues to take her places she’s never dreamed.
