About   (request update)
M. Daniel Bennett Jr. graduated from Hampton University in 1991 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. In 1993 he obtained a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. After working several years in field of child mental health, Bennett entered the doctoral program in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, he earned his Ph.D. becoming only the 2nd African American male to receive such a degree from that program.

Dr. Bennett is an interdisciplinary researcher with clinical practice experience. His research addresses gaps in research and practice with African American males, and incorporates an interdisciplinary focus that transcends social welfare policy and practice aimed at this population. Bennett’s preliminary findings have been presented at several senior interdisciplinary research conferences, and his work has been published in social work and research journals. He has been an expert manuscript reviewer for disciplinary journals including Research on Social Work Practice, Criminology and Public Policy, and the Journal of Black Psychology. Most recently, Dr. Bennett co-edited a special issue of Research on Social Work Practice focused on African American and has published an article exploring contextual risk and protective factors for suicide among African and Latino males.

Despite the many obstacles and challenges Dr. Bennett has faced, he acknowledges the education and experiences provided at Hampton University as the foundation for his continued success.
