Executive Biography

Rarely do you meet an attorney who is truly satisfied with their chosen career path and who is fortunate enough to have landed in a field which provides an organic match for their skills, abilities and interests. Shanon Shumpert is one of those people. She is doing exactly what she hoped to do when she first entered law school. She is one of few employment/labor law specialists who have had the unique experience of holding progressively more advanced positions in private practice, in-house/corporate legal and human resources work settings.

Educated as an attorney, Shanon earned her JD in 1997 from Howard University, Washington, DC. After law school, she returned to her hometown, Chicago, where she practiced general litigation, including employment law with a Chicago law firm. Believing that she could make a more positive direct impact on people if she moved from a law firm to a corporate environment, Shanon accepted an in-house counsel position at her alma mater, DePaul University. Her career quickly accelerated over the next several years as she was promoted several times while at DePaul. She held positions in the legal department and in the human resources department, ultimately culminating in an Associate General Counsel position where she led the organization through staff layoffs, culture changes, trained managers and successfully reduced and defended employment related complaints and lawsuits.

While at DePaul, Shanon completed an LLM in Health Law. She then opted to return to private practice in 2005 to take on health care related claims, in addition to employment litigation. Interestingly, due to the relationships she built while at DePaul, she continued to defend DePaul on employment related issues while she was in private practice. In addition to DePaul’s employment litigation, Shanon’s case load also included representation of several Illinois hospitals and nursing homes.

Thereafter, when law firm principals split into two separate firms, Shanon accepted an in-house opportunity at the University of Chicago Medical Center. There, she acted as the management liaison between the hospital and their four labor unions. Due to her collaborative working style, Shanon managed to settle a significant backload of grievances and reduce the overall number of grievances and arbitrations.

Today, Shanon resides in Chicago and currently leads a team of human resource professionals at a large academic medical center. She continues to have a sincere passion and natural affinity for employee and labor relations and has repeatedly proven her ability to lead through diverse and challenging situations.
