About   (request update)
I never was the girl to stand out as a talented individual, until the day I stepped into a dance studio. At the age of six, mom signed me up for a hobby and it turned into more than that. I met a whole class of talented people and I now could call myself one of them. I was one of the quiet girls in the back who made her way to the front row with solo. Dancing was the only way I felt different and different I was. I danced my heart out to every type of dance they offered. But that was not the only skill I tripped across. I was also starting to become interested in the medical field. How could a little girl be interested in that? My mother, of course. She was nurse at a nursing home, and I would visit all the time. It wasn’t as exciting as hospital, but it was the care that got me interested. Nurses provide care for the people that need it the most, those who are putting their life in your hands. Watching nurses give love, care and belonging was a great thing to experience. I wanted to be a part of that and make that my career goal.
But everything wasn’t as peachy as it sounded. Three years later my mom moved my family down to North Carolina. That was devastating news; I was leaving family and friends and the neighborhood I grew up in, I didn’t know anyone and first day of school was horrible. Everyone talked differently and I got bullied for having a different accent. I had no friends and I felt so alone. I hated it. My grades were horrible; the school called home every day about my grades and, for the first time ever, I was sentenced with summer school. This wasn’t just for one year but three years. I told my mom over and over that the only way I could do better in school was if I were to return where I felt welcome.
After the three years my mom packed my family up again, and we headed back home to New York, It was the most exciting thing to be in a place where I felt comfortable. Everything went back to normal. My grades went up; I was reunited with old friends and even met new ones and, most importantly, I had no summer school. As I moved on to high school I was nervous but I found something that put me right in thick of things. An organized called “Operation Pride” was looking for dancers and I was quick to add my name. As the year went on, the choreographer saw a lot of talent in me and gave me the title of dance captain. I was shocked because it was only a couple of months since I had been there.
But the good times didn't stop there. My love for the medical field was still there and I told my guidance counselor and she offered me a two year course in Nurse Assisting offered at Barry Tech and I signed up the next day. I was excited to start. Now that I am about to be a graduate of not just high school but my nursing class, I can’t wait to start my next journey and accomplish even bigger things.
I have been through a lot, but through it all, overcame any obstacle. I can’t wait to start college and make my dreams come true. I know that it won’t be easy but I will make myself and my family proud.
