This Is My Story
My Mission Dr. William S. Merriman, Jr. Years ago, before I was born, my father came home into our Flower Shop with a Black and white, 17" X 24" picture poster that he purchased for about 50 cent (?), in the historic community known as “The Ville” in the Black Business District of St. Louis, Missouri. He framed this picture and hung it on the front Wall in their flower Shop and proclaimed to my mother that his son is going to go to the school where this man was, it was a picture of Dr. George Washington Carver - Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. My father died when I was about 5 years old, leaving me and 5 sisters to be cared for by my mother. My Mother never told me this story, only until a year before she pasted at 83. She never guided me to Tuskegee Institute, but this story came to be, in my attending and graduating from Tuskegee Institute. After graduating from high school, I got a job in the machine trades making good money. I was ready for the world, I had it made. But, because my girlfriend father did want her dating anyone that was not in school, my plans had to change fast. I immediately started trying to attend a college. Since my high school grades were so poor, I was required to attend summer school, carry a full load of 7.5 hours, and make a 2.0 GPA or better for fall admission to the University of Missouri-Columbia. After that one summer at Mizzou, my GPA was 1.4. Now to Plan B. After talking with Michael Thomas the former Captain of my high school swimming team, who had graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he recommended that I go to Tuskegee Institute since they had a better team travel schedule than Southern. In the fall of 1964, Off I go to Tuskegee Institute. I rode the train south with several of my high school friend. They were headed to colleges in southern Missouri and Tennessee. We partied all the way on the trip. I rode the train alone, on to Montgomery Alabama. When I got to Montgomery, I had to find a way to get me and my footlocker to the Grayhound Bus station. The City bus for some reason was not running, and a taxie was out of the question. So I used a grocery cart to push my junk to Grayhound bus station. When I got to the Tuskegee campus, I had a meeting with Dean Andrew Torrence for special admission to Tuskegee Institute. Little did I know that earlier that week, one of homeboys father, had bought his way into Tuskegee Institute. I was told by Dr. Torrence that you St. Louis folks were not going to run his school. But, Dean Torrence make me an offer, which was to go home, and if I comeback in January 1966 with a 2.0 GPA, He would admit me. I made the lonely return trip home to St. Louis, Missouri enrolled in a college course at the University Missouri – St. Louis Campus, earned an “A” grade, and came back to Tuskegee Alabama on the Grayhound Bus to the same bus station where I had left from that fall. Little did I know, that a student had been murdered there, only days before I had arrived, that spring semester. With a 2.25 GPA, Dr. Torrence Gladly admitted me, and after that it was on! |

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
