PERSONAL DATA
Dr. William S. Merriman, Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri. When he was 5 years of age his father died, leaving his mother, five sisters and himself. While a senior at Charles Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Merriman’s interest in Industrial Education was sparked by a first place and merit award in Machine Shop he received from his participation in the district and state competition of the Missouri Industrial Education Association Awards Contest. He graduated from Charles Sumner High School. While a high school student, he worked after school hours as a busboy in restaurants located in the historic Gaslight Square district, and as a maintenance man for the Famous-Barr Department store after school, during Christmas seasons and summers.
• UNDERGRADUATE CREDIT AND FIELD STUDY
Dr. Merriman attended Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama from which he graduated, with a Bachelor Education Degree majoring in Industrial Education with Machine Shop and Welding as his subject teaching areas. He took additional courses during the summers of his undergraduate years at the University of Missouri-Columbia in St. Louis, Missouri while still a student at Tuskegee Institute. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Merriman was president of the Industrial Arts Club, vice president of the Tuskegee Pre-Alumni Club; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Historian; Chairman of the Technical Arts Club; student representative of the Educational Policy Committee and Teacher Education Council; member of the Student National Education Association; recipient of the Sholl Plumbing award; Oscar Down Machine Shop award; Dean List award; Football letterman 3 years; Swimming team letterman 3 years, Track team letterman 3 years; SIAC Conference Pole Vault Champion.
Dr. Merriman’s undergraduate co-curricular honors were published in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
During school breaks and vacations, Dr. Merriman worked as a substitute teachers in St. Louis Public School System.
• GRADUATE CREDIT AND FIELD OF STUDY
Dr. Merriman completed the requirements for the Master’s degree with a major in Industrial Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated June 1971. He enrolled in the University of Missouri-Columbia to work towards the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Education with Public Administration, and Higher and Adult Education as research support areas. He completed the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy Degree. His dissertation title was, “General Related Instructions in Day Preparatory Vocational-Industrial Education Programs of Missouri”. Dr. Merriman’s graduate co-curricular honors were published in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
During the summers, Dr. Merriman taught a short course at the University of Missouri Labor Education summer program. The topics included: Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, and Workmen’s Compensation.
• SHORT COURSES AND WORKSHOPS
American Vocational Association Convention Pre-Session, Houston, Texas. Course topics were: Proposal Writing and Project Planning. Presented by the Center for Vocation Education, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Correctional Education Association. National Conference on Vocational Education in Correction, Houston, Texas. Workshop topics were: Funding Vocational Education Programs in Corrections, Offender Job Placement, Approaches for Delivering Vocational Education in Corrections, Offender Needs in Short-Term Institutions.
United Auto Workers Union, Walter and May Reuther UAW/Family Education Center, Onaway, Michigan. Labor Studies Scholarships Program; participated in two-week workshops on Labor Law, Grievance Handling and Collective Bargaining. Activities included: forming of mock local union #4064, mock convention of UAW, preparing resolutions, holding hearing, debating major union and social issues.
Job Safety in Vocational Education Curriculum Workshop, Atlanta, Georgia. Workshop topics were: Assessing Safety and Health Training Needs, Identifying Major Problems and Attitudes About Safety Training, Creating student/worker interest in practicing safe work habits, and implementing safety and health training. Presented by the Center for Occupational Research and Development in Waco, Texas.
Pre-AVA Convention Professional Development Workshop. Performance Based Teaching Education (PBTE), in Atlanta, Georgia. Workshop topics were: Concepts and Characteristics of Performance Based Teacher Education, and Implementation of a PBTE program.
Pre-AVA Convention Professional Development Workshop. Improving the Preparation of Vocational Education Administrators: A Competency-Based Approach, St. Louis, Missouri.
EXPERIENCE
• Administrative
St. Louis Medium Security Institution. In the development stage of this correctional institution’s vocational rehabilitation programs, Dr. Merriman was responsible for developing instructional materials to be combined with the institution’s work programs in Auto Body Repairs for the purpose of vocational rehabilitation for the residents of this correctional institution.
Dr. Merriman was employed by the City of St. Louis, Missouri. Division of Youth Services as a Youth Services Specialist and served as advisor to the Metropolitan Youth Council in 1975.
• Teaching
Dr. Merriman taught industrial art at his Alma Mater, Charles Sumner High School, St. Louis, Missouri. He taught Industrial Arts at Wendell Phillips High School, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Merriman was a vocational program developer and auto body repair assistant instructor at the City of St. Louis Medium Security Institution (a correctional facility). Dr. Merriman was also employed as an Assistant Professor of Industrial Education at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. He taught courses in General Metals, Machine Tool Operations, Manufacturing processes, Materials Science and Material Testing. His non-teaching duties included advising industrial art majors and faculty advisor to the Industrial Education Club.
• College Teaching
Dr. Merriman has been employed as adjunct Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning, and Psychology. He teaches, Undergraduate and Graduate Research and Statistics, and Developmental Psychology at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. As a teaching Associate Professor of Industrial Arts and Technology, Dr. Merriman coordinated the undergraduate and graduate, Technology Education program, as well as the Technology Teacher Education programs. He taught graduate and undergraduate professional teacher education methods courses and supervises student teachers. His non-teaching duties include serving on the University’s Teacher Education Council, Graduate Council and other School of Engineering and departmental committees. He was the faculty advisor for the Industrial Educational Club. Dr. Merriman provided extra service consultant assistance to the State of Tennessee Department of Vocational Education in the areas of Technology Education Curriculum, in-service, AIASA Youth Leadership, Trade and Industrial Teacher follow up and VICA Youth Leadership.

• INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE
Dr. Merriman, Technology Educator – CEO, started a successful Computer Technology company in Nashville Tennessee, “Technology Services”. Dr. Merriman’s company provided computers, software, and on-site support for the local HBCU universities, Meharry Medical College, Fisk University, America Baptist College, and Tennessee State University. The personal computer was replacing the Mainframe terminal. His company provided, custom built personal computers, setup computer labs, repaired systems, sold and gave software training to selected administrators, their secretaries, professors, the staff, coaches, and the marching band, at these colleges. IT departments were in their infancy. Dr. Merriman’s
Company provided services for the dental, medical, professional, retailers, and minority businesses located in the north community of Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Merriman has worked in the industrial machine trades in St. Louis, Missouri for two years. After graduating from high school, he worked for Bussman Fuss Company as a tool and die maker trainee, Orchard Paper Company as a wire enameller, McDonnell-Douglas as a sheet metal worker, Knapp and Monarch in quality control. He has also worked as a clearing clerk in a bank, Mercantile Trust Company.

Dr. Merriman had 2 years of Air Force ROTC. Training during his undergraduate school years at Tuskegee Institute
