Eric Hairston has extensive, direct, relevant experiences as Newport News’ GEAR UP coordinator from 2006 to present. Hairston has twenty-five years of school counseling experience, and has served as a Professional School Counselor (middle, high, community college, and four year college), School Counselor Director and an AVID Counselor. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college preparatory program designed to help underrepresented populations prepare for admission to 4-year colleges and universities. Hairston works directly with the schools, administrators, and teachers to be targeted by the proposed GEAR UP grant. He is familiar with the budgetary requirements of the program. Hairston provides professional development to teachers in the basic GEAR UP Elective Class and trains high school counselors throughout the United States on the role in helping underrepresented populations meet the rigorous requirements of post-secondary education. He holds a graduate degree from Hampton University in Counseling-College Student Development and an undergraduate degree from Shaw University in Intermediate Education. Eric Hairston is uniquely qualified to handle the day-to-day administration and implementation of the Newport News GEAR UP program. Hairston is currently a board member for Project Discovery in Virginia, Virginia College Access and a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
