Alvin (Al) F. Smith, Jr. was named the Facilities Planning Manager of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in May 2004. As the Facilities Planning Manager, Al Smith is primarily responsible for all strategic space planning efforts for production and administrative area renovations and facility infrastructure upgrades of utility and mechanical systems at the BEP. In 2007, Al Smith’s program responsibilities expanded to asset management to include; real and personal property management, fleet management, and material recycling.

Prior to his appointment as Facilities Planning Manager, Al Smith began his career at the BEP as an Industrial Engineer in April 2002. During his 25 year professional career, Al Smith has occupied various project, program and organizational management employment positions in the private sector in various industries and possess in-depth experience and skills in; system design and engineering, business operations and process reengineering, and organizational management and program administration.

Mr. Smith’s educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia State University, a Master of Science and Master of Business Administration Degrees from the University of Maryland. Al Smith is also has completed two Senior Executive Leadership Development Programs at the National Leadership Institute/Center for Creative Leadership, UMUC and the Graduate School USA, and was recently accepted into Harvard University KBS Executive Fellows Program and the African American Federal Executive Association Fellows Program.

Mr. Smith is affiliated and holds membership in various professional organizations; National Black MBA Association, National Society of Black Engineers, Institute of Industrial Engineers, African American Federal Executive Association, Virginia State University Alumni Chapter, and University of Maryland Alumni Chapter.

Mr. Smith is also an active participant in civic and charitable organizations in the community; vice chairman of the Charles County Commissioner Historical Preservation Board, member of the Freemason & Eastern Star Charitable Foundation Board of Directors, Hughesville Maryland Preservation and Planning Commission, a leadership officer (WJGS) in the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia, Grand Inspector General in the United Supreme Council, AASR, and a Past Chapter Board of Director of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Mr. Smith is a native Washingtonian, and completed his childhood education in Newark, NJ and Washington, DC. He and his wife reside in Hughesville, Maryland and they have two daughters, two sons and two grandchildren.
