Best Memories:
As I was ending my junior year of high school I decided to join a leadership program in my community known as Bridge Builders. This would be my first year participating in this group, so I came into the experience very open minded. Little did I know, I would be sharing a room with five other girls. There was only one shower in the connected dorm, so as you can imagine it was a challenge trying to share one bathroom for five days however, we somehow managed to make it work. I was one of the few girls who happened to have a roommate who wasn’t of the same race as me. The whole concept behind Bridge Builders is to be able to interact with diverse groups of people and to become leaders. With this being said, I had to learn to get along with people who had different views and religions from me. Along with that, we also had to give up our technology and rely on our group leaders to get us to where we needed to be throughout the day. The first day was hard trying to cope without having a sense of time or reality. Throughout the week, you slowly begin to forget about the outside world and focus on your group and the activities set before you. We had to do group challenges such as rock wall climbing and rely on our group to help support us. After each activity, we’d talk about what we just did and if we couldn’t complete the challenge what we could have done differently in order to accomplish them better. Overall, I learned a lot from this experience and I would highly recommend this program to other juniors and seniors.
