Best Memories:

In the SMN Signature Program: Medical Science I had the opportunity to go to KU Medical Center, Research Medical Center and Truman Medical Center and shadow different health care workers in various departments. After attending my core classes, I would go to the hospital/unit I had been assigned to and I would shadow a physician in that unit. My favorite memory is of when I was shadowing at Research Medical Center, and I saw my first trauma. It was a GSW. Two bullets had entered through the right oblique, ricochet off of a rib and pierced the kidney, liver, colon and spleen before exiting from the left oblique. The trauma Surgeon had inserted a tube in the right lung to alleviate some of the pressure that was caused by the blood in the lung. We took the patient to CT to confirm the injuries before taking them to surgery. That day, although not the most gruesome or educational day in my academic career, was the day when I decided on my goal to be a surgeon. I had always known that I want to be a surgeon, but that day, is the day when my goal became "it." I can not find the appropriate words no matter how hard I try, but that day is and will always remain one of the most memorable days in my life. ... not what you expected huh...
