About   (request update)
LaBrittannii Barnes is a senior majoring in Elementary Education at Texas College. She is set to graduate in 2015 and hopes to also complete a minor in Early Childhood Education.
When asked about what first drew her to field of education, she said she loved being able to give back to students what someone instilled in her. She comes from a long linage of educators where teaching and serving others is a part of her DNA. She started preparing for a career in education in her senior year of high school. She had the privilege of being a part of the Ready, Set, Teach cluster. By being a part of this cluster, she was assigned to a local elementary school working with pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms. She worked with the teachers and classes the entire school year; three days a week. The teachers allowed her to observe them and then they trained her to work with a small group of students during small group instruction. The responsibilities included assisting with helping the students identify letters, colors, and numbers that they were working on. LaBrittannii loved when the students shared that they learned their new number or letter for the week. They thanked her for helping them. The feeling of joy she received was greater than anything she could have ever imagined. She knew at that moment, becoming an educator was the right career choice.
During LaBrittannii’s educational opportunities included helping with reading inventories, bulletin boards, field trips with the students, and attended parent conferences to talk with the parents of the students she assisted in small group. The teachers were so grateful for her support and she was grateful for the experience.
LaBrittannii was also a part of the Teach for America organization. The cluster teacher asked her to be a class historian for the Teach for America group. They went to Austin, Texas to compete with other future teachers during the course of her high school years. She was able to create lesson plans and other important items that she would need to be an effective classroom teacher.
After graduation, LaBrittannii was able to work in Dallas Independent School District as a summer student intern for the Professional Development Department. The job responsibilities included assisting with summer teacher training. She was able to work hand and hand with thousands of teachers and learn valuable things to shape and mold her into the teacher she can’t wait to become.
To allow LaBrittannii to have a well-rounded student and educator, she decided to join a sorority. Her sorority group attends community service projects on a weekly basis. The events have included a community service project at the local Boys and Girls Club to celebrate events such as Cinco de Mayo. During most events, LaBrittannii enjoys assisting the school children with special gifts and experiencing the elated feeling of lending a helping hand. She is also a member of the school dance team. In both roles, she attends various community celebrations.

“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” ― Mahatma Gandhi
