About   (request update)

Jeffery Weatherford graduated from Howard University May 9 not only with a Master of Fine Arts but also with a new book. Coincidentally, the book that he illustrated You Can Fly: The Tuskegee Airmen, is set at another historically black institution during World War II. A mother-son collaboration, the book is written by New York Times bestselling children’s book author Carole Boston Weatherford, a professor at Fayetteville State University.

The year 2016 marks the 75th anniversary of the so-called “Tuskegee Experiment” which challenged racist notions that blacks were unfit to fly. The Tuskegee Airmen began training at Moton Airfield in Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, in 1941. In 200 of their 205 combat missions, the pilots did not lose a bomber. They were awarded more than 900 medals and became a respected fighter squadron, paving the way for full integration of the armed forces in 1948. The Tuskegee Airmen received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007 and were seated with dignitaries at President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.
YOU CAN FLY depicts Tuskegee pilots, mechanics, navigators, bombardiers and nurses as well as celebrities, historic figures and racial barriers of the day.

Jeffery is a multitalented artist, designer and rapper based in the Washington, DC area. He is the founder of the global hip hop collective, Triiibe Worldwide. The son of a poet and a preacher, he was born in High Point, North Carolina. He holds a B.A. in Art and Design from Winston-Salem State University where he was a Chancellor’s Scholar and honor graduate. In addition to being a children’s book illustrator, he is an arts educator. He conducts hip hop workshops combining literacy and technology. His art has shown at galleries in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions and is in the Children’s Defense Fund collection at Alex Haley Farm in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Praise for the book:
Weatherford again wields the power of poetry to tell a gripping historical story, reinforced by dramatically shaded scratchboard illustrations by her son, making a notable debut.—Publisher’s Weekly (starred review)

A masterful, inspiring evocation of an era.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
