Although not highly educated themselves, my parents instilled within me from an early age the importance of education and education’s ability of catapulting to places otherwise unattainable. Therefore, my educational ambitions are deeply rooted, and my accomplishments began early in my childhood. Honor roll was the norm, and anything less would have been shocking. Over many years of study and high academic achievement, my record (transcripts/resumes) speaks volumes to what a combination of dedication, hard work, and desire can manifest in the life of a young child born into poverty in rural Alabama.
I have over ten years of experience in the education arena. My career started as a high school mathematics teacher in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, after less than a year of graduating from college. In 2001, I started teaching at the technical college level. I have taught basic mathematics, introduction to algebra, algebra and advanced algebra. My community college career is ongoing with adjunct faculty positions at the Aiken Technical College and the Augusta Technical College. Currently, I am also an adjunct professor in Augusta, Georgia at Strayer University, where I am teaching Contemporary International Problems (an International Relations course) and American Government within the Political Science Department and tutoring algebra on Saturday mornings as one of the faculty tutors to assist students who need extra assistance in coursework. During my teaching career in Augusta, I have also taught high school mathematics. While I have taught for nearly twenty years, I have worked in other fields also. My
career as a scientist began years ago at Stillman College in Alabama. The summers in
college were not the time to become stagnant, for every summer during my college
years; I worked with a summer program in my major field of study. All of the summer
internships were normally out of town in places such as Huntsville, Alabama; Waltham,
Massachusetts; Davis, California and Boston, Massachusetts. I also participated in a
Cooperative learning program at the Ciba-Geigy Corporation in McIntosh, Alabama, for
one semester where I worked as an analytical laboratory technician.
After graduating from undergraduate school, my work in my chosen profession began in
Alabama. I was hired by the Ciba-Geigy Corporation for the summer after graduation
from college and offered a permanent position, but I declined because I wanted to
further my educational pursuits. I had no idea at that time that I would be in this field of
study, pursuing a terminal degree. I worked for the Sony Corporation, briefly in Dothan,
Alabama, as an analyzer technician in the laboratory. During my time there, I was
offered a position as a Chemist in Aiken, South Carolina, at the Savannah River Site.
Until workforce restructuring forced me to rethink my career in science, I worked for
over five years at the Site. By this time, I had already moved to Augusta, Georgia,
where I have lived for thirteen years now.
After teaching for an academic year in the Richmond County School system, I began a
career at the Georgia Regents University (Medical College of Georgia) as a Radiation
Safety technician inspecting the Department of Corrections medical facilities throughout
the state. My career has spanned nearly six years at GRU, where I have worked in the Environmental Health and Safety Department as a Radiation Safety technician, as well as a Chemical Safety technician for the campus. After furthering my education with a Masters in Public Administration, I was hired as the Outreach Development Coordinator for the Life Sciences Business Development Center which is the business incubator, where research, inventions, and products can be commercialized by faculty in their very own businesses for profits. Currently, I am the Research Operations Coordinator (Building Manager) for the GRU Cancer Center.
During my studies at Georgia Regents University, I had numerous pieces of my work published in journals and I presented at several conferences in various states. During my first year, I composed a paper that has been published in various publications and presented at several conferences, entitled: “Liberia: Study of Liberian Government and its Relationship to American Government”. Some of my other works were composed during my final year of study to include my capstone project upon graduation, “BID for Business Improvement Districts: Benefits of CADI in Augusta, GA”.
