Akela graduated from Morris Brown College in 2002 with a B.S. in Community Health Education. She went on to Texas Woman's University, where she graduated with a Master's in Healthcare Administration. Akela worked in healthcare administration for nearly a decade, before deciding to pursue her passion of writing. Akela fulfilled her dream of writing and publishing her first novel in early 2015. The Cost of Baggage is availabe where books are sold.

In addition to writing, Akela is also an established real estate agent in Dallas, TX.
