About   (request update)
In eighth grade I met my mom for the first time since I was born. I grew up with my grandparents, and it wasn't easy. I didn't feel like they supported me the way i needed to be. My mom was never in my life because she was on drugs and my dad was and still is a drunk. Having to hear stories about how my parents fit into the list of stereotypical “ghetto black people” who never cared really bothered me. Celebrating important days of my life was a nuisance because in the back of my head I knew that they were not coming. In the long run not having the support from the people I needed the most taught me that depending on others isn’t going to get me through life. Sometimes you just have to believe in yourself instead of waiting on others because if you wait too long you might miss out on your chance to succeed.
It felt so strange meeting the person who abandoned me. Growing up, there was nobody to really talk to because the person you were supposed to really tell things to is your mom and she wasn't there. I felt like I was in a corner with the whole world just staring at me. To make matters even worse my grandfather started back on drugs. So I was forced to babysit him as if he was a child. I felt like I had no say so in the world. Then, I knew that this was not the right path for me. I did not want to fall in the path of either parent or my grandfather.
My senior year started and just on day one I could feel that diploma in my hands. I could see my future right before my eyes. I finally opened that door that everyone kept slamming in my face and this time I put a door stop in it because I refused to to have my hopes and dreams taken from me anymore. If I want my life to go the way I wanted it to then I would have to stop letting people control the things I do. I was told to "stop holding myself back if I wasn't happy then make a change" in which I did.
