Claim To Fame:
When I graduated this past August, my advisor suggested some questionable advice: “Just take any opportunity in public health you can find and figure out the rest later.” While I think I could have gained transferrable skills and on-the-job experience anywhere, the field of public health is a broad one, I wanted to make sure that my first step was one that supported the causes I had grown to love over the years. These passions include HIV/AIDS research, health promotion and the provision of public health service to underserved communities. Throughout my public health career, my focus has always been to perform accurate epidemiological methods for the production of valid research findings, develop strong relationships, and to ensure the quality and reliability of my work. As the Data Analyst with Earthjustice Legal Defense., my tasks included drafting/revising reports for environmental showcase communities to present for the Big Sugar Summit public health conference in the summer of 2015. This involved developing a complete PowerPoint presentation integrating data provided by the U.S. Census, geographical representations of the communities involved using ArcGIS software and the development of graphic correlations in Microsoft Excel for trends such as race, socioeconomic status, education, etc. At the Florida Department of Health as the epidemiologist intern, I worked with a multi-disciplinary team of public health nurses, case management staff, epidemiologists, quality managers, and program administrators on public health grants. I performed a needs assessment review on the 1305 Chronic Disease Prevention Grant with pre and post surveys of the audiences for the Healthiest Weight and School Health Initiative, as well as implemented an analysis plans for state of Florida trends of pre-diabetes.
