About   (request update)
I, Philip Varnes, am a graduate from Virginia Union University majoring in Biology with a 3.4 GPA. During my time at Virginia Union I was a member of two honor societies, Alpha Kappa Mu and Beta Kappa Chi for which I was treasurer. Both of these honor societies have given me experience in the areas of working in a team and communication skills. These societies are based on helping others to achieve their goals as well. I was also a member of the Student Government Association for which I was the senator at large. Thus far, in my academic career, I have focused on my studies in order to maintain the high standards I have set for myself. My professors as well as my colleagues know me well due my active role in all of my classes, and my interest in the sciences.
My last working position was at the University of Richmond, in the HHMI postbac program, in the biochemistry department, under Dr. Ellis Bell. The primary focus of the research I've was doing is on ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs). Some of my duties included preparation of buffers, media prep, pH testing, advise undergraduate students in lab, and protein purification. I was also a teacherís assistant during the school year, which included laboratory prep and answering questions during class labs. So far I've presented at the Virginia Academy of Science on May 15, 2014 at Virginia Commonwealth University, and also the Protein Society Symposium in San Diego, California on July 29, 2014.
Spring of 2015 I was accepted into veterinary school and I was actually enrolled in the fall 2015. I was actually attending Virginia Techís veterinary program, but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to leave. My drive to push forward and continue to work toward my goals has not waivered and am determined to be the best scientist I can be.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
It has been a life long goal of mine to be placed in a position, where I am able to make a difference in the medical field in some form. I plan to some day obtain my PhD, to do research in order to discover new applications in the health field, and possibly work for the CDC. I've volunteered as a physical therapist assistant, so I have been able to improve my social skills and as well as being able to work in a team setting. This volunteering opportunity took place during the summer of 2010, and I will never forget it. My duties included monitoring heart rates, weight, and pulse/ox. Repairing wheel chairs, helping elderly with treadmills, stationary bikes, and other machines, distributing food and office duties such as faxing and answering the phone. I helped the elderly where needed at this day facility.
