About   (request update)
My inspiration originates from the simplicity of my skin color. Like a tree harvesting its seeds, my color generates and stems a plethora of challenges, social injustices and a wide range of unlawful perceptions. The educational system institutionalizes individuals to see color. Up until high school, I began to see what my true color was, which was black. I saw that I was a different color than my friends. I saw that my color did not compare to anyone else’s in my class. I saw that I was ostracized and out casted. I was the minority at my high school; I was looked down upon and noted as inferior. Coming from a big family, I had to step up and be the change agent for my family. What makes me special is that I can take my adversities and change them around to help the youth have positive self reflections of themselves. I can also work several jobs while, maintaining over 18 credit hours at Winston-Salem State University. I have taken my knowledge of social work and community service to a global level. During my 2015-2017 academic career at Winston-Salem State University, I had the opportunity to study abroad both in Kenya and Brazil. During both visits abroad, we went to an empowerment organization called Girl Power, and the VÓ Flor Orphanage. During our trip we brought school supplies, cleaning supplies, bubbles, jump ropes, coloring books, stickers, dolls, toy trucks, and other playful items to both study abroad trips. So, it is no surprise that my most meaningful accomplishment was getting to do community service on a global spectrum. This was no easy task and it took months of intensive research for scholarships, working three part-time jobs (Subway, Student Teacher for African Studies, Student Teacher at Mineral Springs Middle School), and maintaining 18 credit hours at Winston-Salem State University. I wanted to be the first in my family to have a passport and do community service on a macro-level. My motivation and accomplishments sets me apart from a few of my fellow peers because not many students will overwork themselves. An individual does not know the meaning of true dedication and hard work until it is time to commit to a goal. Few students my age take advantage of committing to traveling abroad.
Current Whereabouts:
I am currently a mentor, a teacher and a leader in Winston-Salem State University.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
After I get my Bachelor of Social Work at Winston-Salem State University, I plan to go back to school to receive my Masters and then a Ph. D. at Howard University. To further my experience, and allow me to prepare for the theoretical and practical work of Social Work, I have decided to expand my knowledge of community service outside of the United Sates. In the midst of receiving a MSW in Social Work, I want to join the Peace Corps. Joining the Peace Corps will allow me to volunteer abroad in another country, and pay for my tuition at the same time. I have experienced volunteering at orphanages in Nairobi, Kenya and Bahia, Brazil, which impacted my decision on global community service. My dream is to move to Kenya. In the Peace Corps I will be able to practice my skills and teach workshops to the community while empowering others.
