About   (request update)
As an emerging environmental science professional, Darius A. Stanton II has grown from working under multiple disciplines and innovative roles of the environmental movement.
His roots in environmental sciences grew early, as he was a student at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland enrolled in the Science and Technology program. Here, Darius’ senior year research practicum was an evaluation of forestry succession in Greenbelt National Park.
After graduating from Eleanor Roosevelt, Darius began his tenure at Claflin University, the first Historically Black College/University(HBCU) in South Carolina. During his tenure at Claflin University, he became a student leader amongst the campus and local community, advocating for environmental awareness and public health initiatives. His freshman year he was elected Mr. Freshman and worked for the university as a donor solicitor within the Claflin alumni call center. As a member of Friends of the Earth, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and a Green For All College Ambassador, Darius was able to leverage his networks to host events and forums that raised environmental consciousness and the significance of participation from grassroots communities. While raising environmental cognizance on Claflin University’s campus and the broader Orangeburg community, Darius also conducted science research at Claflin University, Emory University and Brown University in biofuel feedstock for biofuel production and microbial ecology in Narragansett Bay. As a senior at Claflin University, Darius was elected Mr. Claflin University 2013-2014, where he was able to execute his platform for Project H.E.A.L.T.H.Y. (Health Education and Learning to Help/Heal Yourself.” A member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, he was awarded the Outstanding Departmental Student Award from the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the Claflin University 2014 Presidential Leadership & Service Award. His most memorable award however was helping Claflin University transition from a university that did not recycle in 2010, to being recognized as one of the top five private HBCUs with sustainable environmental initiatives. Darius completed his Bachelor’s of Science degree at Claflin University with Cum Laude honors, majoring in environmental science with a minor in political science in 2014.

The summer before beginning graduate school, Darius interned for the fusion energy sciences office within the Department of Energy, where he composed a 30-page white paper review that evaluated the international collaborations between the United States and other nations conducting fusion energy research. In the fall of 2014, Darius began graduate school at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. In pursuit to obtaining my masters in environmental management, Darius’ concentration was global environmental change. During his matriculation through Duke University, Darius obtained two certificates. A certificate in community-based environmental management, and a certificate in teaching inclusion and diversity in environmental leadership. He was also granted the opportunity to travel to Venice, Italy and Bolivia to assess sea level rise and climate change implications on urban development and sustainable design. He traveled to Bolivia for his Masters project, a client based project with Partners of the Americas that assessed the feasibility of implementing a green building code in the nation’s capital La Paz, Bolivia. Mr. Stanton has an interest in conducting sustainable design projects domestic and internationally, with a strong emphasis of community-based environmental management and workforce development.

After graduating with his Masters in May 2016 as one of three African-Americans in his graduating class at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Darius has accepted a position as a diversity and educational outreach workgroup staffer with the Chesapeake Bay Research Consortium and Chesapeake Bay Program under the EPA. Mr. Stanton plans to gain management and policy expertise that will further his capacity in sustainable design or green policy. As a Mellon fellow, Darius plans to return to school and attain his PhD in sustainable design from Harvard University.
