Best Memories:
One great experience in my life was being a member of my high school's basketball team while maintaining a 3.5 GPA. The academic accomplishment was achieved taking honors courses on and the scale was 4.0. It has taught me a couple keys such as hard work and dedications are essential to become successful in life. It also has taught me a lot of responsibility, not only on the court, but also off of the court as well. I can honestly say that being a part of this team has made me become a better person. One example of the hard work basketball has taught me was the benefits that are a result pushing myself. We did a plethora of drills during basketball practice that left us extremelytired and I encouraged my teammates as well as myself to fight through the exhaustion. Another example of hard work was in the weight room. Our coach was very tough on us and motivated us to push ourselves to the absolute limit and once again we fought through the pain because we knew it would pay off in the long run. The pay off was in building our technique so that we all became better basketball players. My hard work played a role to my dedication towards basketball and also towards staying on the team. Through all of the long and tough practices and all the agonizing and difficult workouts, I could've easily of just quit and walked away from basketball completely. But it was my goal and my ambition to be successful in my high school basketball career. The Coaching Staff and my teammates as well started to recognize my hard work and dedication and voted me to be the captain of the team this year. This accomplishment along with being a starter on the team meant a lot to me. Becoming the leader of the team came with a whole lot of responsibilities, not only on but also of the court. Academics have always come easy for me. As an African America Athlete, my 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale has resulted in a lot of recognition. My parents set the expectation of high academic achievement being my primary goal and athletics was allowed only if the grades were above average. As the team Captain, I had to make sure my teammates kept their grades up while I encouraged them to stay out of trouble. So my academic achievements served as a role model for my teammates in the role of a team captain. My story for any athlete is to recognize that the skills of perseverance and hard work apply to both academics and their participation in sports. Excellence is a mindset and you can have them in both areas.
