Claim To Fame:
Since the fourth grade, I have grown up a minority as an African American. I was raised in a predominately Hispanic and Asian community. It was obvious that I was different and would stand out from everyone else. In a class of over thirty students, I would be the only “black” one and it has continued to be this way throughout high school. However, this gave me thick skin, showed me the meaning of ignorance, and shaped my views on life. I was never verbally teased, but the stares were apparent, especially in elementary school. I felt as though my intelligence would sometimes be doubted or questioned. At the beginning of the school year, teachers and students would not expect me to excel in any academic subject. Even the lazy kids that refused to do their own work, would not dare ask to copy mine (even though I would not have given it to them). They believed I would get majority of the answers wrong based on my skin color. Nonetheless, I quickly proved them wrong and exceeded all doubt-filled expectations. I would always become one of the top students in all of my classes. In a strange way, this doubt gave me self-confidence. Their skepticism pushed me that much more and made my motivations to succeed even greater. I promised myself that I would never fall into a negative stereotype based on my race. I would be proud to be African American and show the positivity. Also, being a minority in a majority rules city can be difficult outside of school. I remember walking through the mall with my mom and younger cousin. We decided to go into an Asian owned jewelry store. The whole time that we were shopping, the glares were evident from employees, as well as the apparent owner. Then, they began following my cousin around to see if she was stealing. Anyone, no matter what race they are, would clearly be offended. However, we had to deal with it in pride. Someone else's ignorance cannot result in our stupidity if we caused a scene in the store. I learned patience and the technique of brushing it off, as well as walking away with my head held high. Growing up in my neighborhood has been difficult at times, however, I would not change anything about it. I could be the only African American in a room full of millions, but I will be comfortable within myself. People are sometimes oblivious to my true potential because they judge me before getting to know me. However, my confidence outshines the negativity and I always overcome racial obstacles.
Most Memorable Moment:
I love the fact of having to be responsible without my mom there to do things for me and direct me. I promised to myself that I would make her more proud of me than I could ever be proud of myself. I study hard and work hard. I allow NO time for pleasure unless my studies and homework is done. My college friends call me "MAMA" since we do not attend any functions until everyone has done homework / studied for tests. I love my college life and since I am the only one in my family (on both sides of the family) to ever attend college, I need to make it to graduation and claim a successful career. My mother is my role model. She works so hard to make sure bills are paid. When things do not go right, she just prays and smiles. I know she stresses out but she will never allow herself to break down. I continue to go hard in college to please myself and my mommie. Please help me to enroll for my last year at Langston. My mom's brother passed away so sudden and this stopped life for all of us. However, we have to pick ourselves up and continue to success. In Jesus Name.

Best Memories:
Being pushed and reminded by my mother to focus and study in order to claim a future. I now understand what she was trying to get me and all of my friends to understand. I thank God for her. I really do. Friday night football! It was like a reward for the end of the week to all of us, including our parents.
