Hello, my name is Jamal Hammond, I am a 18 year old senior and I attend Bowie High School in Bowie Md. From the age of 12, I have been on Vyvanse, Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta, why you may ask, because that’s when I was diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, with underlying issues of Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Anxiety, Sluggish Cognitive Disorder, and now Depression. I can tell you that being a child and being diagnosed with having so much wrong with you is not a good feeling, it also doesn’t allow you to make many friends because they don’t don’t know how to deal with someone that has those issues. I can tell you that I was bullied by peers as well as teacher’s. I was labeled as being lazy or uninterested in what I was doing. I was told that I used my disability as an excuse so that I could get out of things, and that I was actually lying and that I didn’t have a disability at all. When someone goes through something like that, you wonder is it worth it, should I be here, will anyone care if I am. So I have contemplated not being here, and just when I thought it wasn’t worth being around, I found my love for the arts. Dancing, Acting, Speaking on the topics of ADHD, suicide awareness, and anti bullying. I started associating with others that are like minded as I am,and realized that I could be more useful sharing my story, going through school and proving to myself as well as others that this is not a disability that will hold you back. That you can be in control of your destiny.I am much more than my disability and I can help others see that they are too.

I hope to one day be able to afford a studio where the arts can be taught at no cost
