LeMoyne-Owen College class of 2021
Undergrad Major: Biology
Claim To Fame:
It is my desire to become a Medical Doctor. Currently, I am a Biology major at LeMoyne- Owen College, an HBCU located in Memphis, Tennessee. My interest in the medical field peaked as I prepared to graduate from high school. Due to family problems and finances, I was not able to go directly into college. Instead, I enrolled in Concorde Career College as a student to become a medical assistant. I am now a Certified Medical Assistant and have experience having worked in a clinical setting. The experience that I offer enables me to work side by side with individuals who are outstanding in their field of study. The association with these individuals will enhance the passion I feel for the field of medicine and research. It is my goal to establish a clinic and pharmacy in an area where health care is almost non-existent as a result of the poverty level in the community. In other words, I want to take my skills back to where I grew up. I want to do no harm and I want to be the difference between poverty and hope. This scholarship opportunity is the vehicle and catalyst that is needed to propel me to fulfill that goal. Christmas, 2017 was tolerable because I remembered that Christ was the reason for the season. However, death the grim reaper swept away my family that year, and the remembrance of his visits hit hard around the holidays. My loving aunt died two days after the fourth of July in her sleep peacefully. One week later, my uncle followed her in death from a stroke. Why do I want this scholarship opportunity? It is not because I am a minority. People can see that. It is not because I am the first in my family to go to college. Many people know that. I need this opportunity because I need answers and closure. These answers and closure are not about the secrets of life and death. They are not about why God chose to take two people I loved dearly. The answers and closures I need will come after study and practice of doing research under the direction of research giants who can prepare me for the field of research. I chose LeMoyne- Owen College because I was introduced by a great support system, which led to a successful first year. I dream of medical school, and I also see myself finding answers that could one day result in cures for some of the illnesses that claim thousands of lives daily. If I am granted this opportunity, I know that It will only be the beginning of a passion that is brewing within me to be a servant to mankind. I am a STEM major at an HBCU, I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to research health problems and other complications that impact the quality of life for millions of individuals. I am a motivated self-starter. I am, “The Future Dr. Walker”. “A mind is a terrible thing waste”, and I do not want to be that statistics.
