About   (request update)
March 16,2018 is the date I’ll never forget . Not only is it my cousin's birthday , it’s also the day I lost my grandmother. My grandmother went to dialysis 3 days a week and also had over 40 pills to consume daily to feel normal. She could’ve been saved if they recognized the symptoms of the infection that spread throughout her body . The week after her death I researched a ton of articles and studies on type 2 diabetes and how susceptible they are to infections and diseases . The symptoms were clear : headaches, fever , nausea , foot pain , etc . It was so clear to me that she had a chance to live , but she unfortunately did not. As I researched frustration rushed through my head as my eyebrows furrowed . Regret filled my body as I pondered on the question “ What could I do ?” . I hated myself , I hated the doctors , I hated the nurses , and I hated my family for not noticing the signs . Although that was a rough time of my life , it was also a time where I realized my love for science . I now understood that the medical field was my calling . I really knew it was my destiny when I went to the Overlook Medical Center where I asked Registered Nurses and interns , who were my age , about the medical field and how it excited them . My grandmother’s death was one thing I wish I did not have to endure so early , but it also led to my love and passion for medicine .
Being an African American female in America all odds are against me automatically . As Orlando Patterson , a Harvard socialist , coined the idea of “natal alienation “ that already seals my fate before I can take my first breath . Given my unfortunate circumstances I am driven by obstacles to change the stereotype of African American women in medicine . I want to be able to look up more African American doctors and see majority female rather than male . I want to be able to make my mother and family proud by introducing me as a doctor . Medicine gives me that hope . Medicine allows for me to catch my obstacles and knock them down one by one . Medicine provides me with great stability in life and a chance to change history and give back to others .

In life , I learned the cliche saying “ Everything happens for a reason “ is inevitably true . Although the passing of my grandmother or the oppression that I go through as a young black female is not something I want to learn from , it ultimately accelerated my love for medicine . I yearn to be a model for other black girls who look like me and come from a place with little hope for a prosperous future. I want young girls to acknowledge that when faced with obstacles your hard work , dedication, perseverance, and hope is all you need to succeed . This is why medicine is important to me .

Life & Professional Aspirations:
As an African American women , I believe that going into a field where it is worked against black people , specifically women , I can change history in this world & allow for other young black girls like me to do the same
