About   (request update)
I, Mateo Smith, am a unique person, and in my life this is displayed most prominently by the fact that I was homeschooled through highschool. “It wasn't something we planned,” explains my mom. But, encouraged by homeschooling relatives and friends to “try it for one year,” we embarked on the homeschool journey. Nearly fifteen years later, I will be the second graduate from our family's homeschool program. While I did not choose to be homeschooled, I’m eternally grateful that my parents decided to continue the adventure.

The freedom of homeschooling allows me to pursue a plethora of interests that have contributed to my unique personality. These days I enjoy running, biking, all things electronics, music engineering, soldering, mushroom hunting, listening to Japanese jazz music; the list goes on. However, my love of learning stems from a passion for discovering how things work. From a very young age, I spent hours taking things apart and examining their inner workings. When I encountered a new challenge, I turned to books to discover the answer. My inquisitive nature makes me a natural problem solver. Case in point, my FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, the Irrational Engineers #6239, competes with other public school robotics teams in my area. Our homeschool robotics club is supported by donations through fundraising and our parents pockets; we don't have access to the resources that some other schools have. However, creativity thrives on constraints. While preparing for a recruitment presentation to new families, I received a call twenty minutes before leaving, asking me to bring a speaker for the projector. I did not have one readily available, but I did have the materials to make one. In the span of fifteen minutes, I was able to use my soldering skills to construct a speaker for the meeting. It wasn’t the most attractive speaker, but it worked well, and the presentation was without complication. I was grateful to be of service and a contributing member to my team.

Homeschooling has not only afforded me the perfect opportunity to explore my many interests; it has and continues to influence the unique person I’m becoming.
