I am an ambitious young African-American lady originally from Columbia, Missouri, now relocated to Galveston, Texas. I am a rising college freshmen who is attending Spelman College fall of 2020.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
After completing my undergrad degree in Psychology and minor in music at Spelman. I am determined to get into a medical school that offers an excellent psychiatry program. I aspire to use this knowledge to improve the overall quality of life by educating the public and provoking dialogue that this country desperately needs. By way of; clinical practice, research, social media platforms, or other avenues. It is my belief that the pursuit of truth or seeking knowledge is pointless without a clear and critical understanding of the problems facing individuals in mental health. The country's reality has made it more apparent for health care to be centered around utilizing technology to help reinforce trust in communities and medical centers. Furthermore I am passionate about stigmas that need to be addressed within the African American community in regards to mental health diagnosis and trusting medical practitioners as a whole. There are several systemic barriers that hinder both minority and impoverished communities from necessary medical care that they need. As it stands, currently a zip code can determine a black individual's life expectancy. A fire is lit inside of me to see through all of my goals and change the problems from within. To make "herstory." If you will as an African-American women in a STEM profession. My goal is not just to brand myself, but to leave a legacy that generations of women in my family can share, and to know that through my accomplishments I have always had them in mind.
