At the age of 17, I left the city of Houston with a high school diploma, an Associate’s degree, and an empty toolbox ready to be filled with wisdom, professionalism, and all the other nouns that exemplify excellence. Within two years I was able to top my program and class by being a rising public relations professional and I built my resume by juggling internships every semester. I worked hard to maximize my full exposure into a career in Mass Communication so that I could be as versatile as possible, find out who I am, how I could make a difference, and what I wanted to do as a mass media professional.
Attending an HBCU showed me that my career should be of service and justice to my community. Xavier taught me as a student professional to embrace my voice, my womanhood, my race, and the value within myself. I must intentionally place myself in spaces where women of color can be recognized. Xavier taught me that if you want to make an impact on the world, you must believe in your own potential; your only limit is your own imagination. This is the philosophy that drives me as a professional. My dedication and commitment allowed me to take on numerous tasks while also juggling schoolwork and strict deadlines for
organizations; which I always delivered on. I did all of this while maintaining A’s and B’s. I started out with print journalism, writing for African American newspapers. I always made sure my information was factual, research-based, and clear and concise. I understood how to write accurately and ensured I only relied on facts. I worked well at contextualizing content for readers so that my target or general audience could understand my reporting, or for public relations writing – my messaging. I provided background information so that my story angle provided perspective for readers or insights they didn’t know about or considered before.
When I interned with the Houston Independent School District, the largest school district in Texas, the ability to serve mostly Hispanic, Black and Arab-American families allowed me to ensure our external communications considered all Houston families and their needs. Professional experiences like these allowed me to elevate communities of color and be a spokesperson for our communities.
I am a servant leader who cares about the greater good. Yes I can do the work, but I want to do work that has impact. As a marketing and communications specialist for the Center For Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education, I work to address inequities in health outcomes that impacts communities of color. During the summer, I was committed with the center’s efforts to reduce health disparities exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. To address inequitable health outcomes we partnered with community organizations to create a space for local experts to share their experiences with the pandemic, and their expertise on improving health and wellness within communities of color. Through this work I was able to create media messaging that has a direct connections with underrepresented communities in the current global crisis we are facing.
Current Whereabouts:
I am currently seizing every opportunity I can to become a better strategic communication professional. I have had secured several internships and have started my own brand to hone meh skills.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
I want to build a career in which I can be representative of communities that are marginalized or not always heard. It is not enough for me to work with a major com- pany or organization. What’s more important is that I am put in a position where I can articulate the needs and goals of diverse communities, publics’, and consumers. Diverse representation within organizations can support companies in their planning, strategy, and execution of engaging with its diverse consumers. Therefore, I would like to study major brands, beyond their diversity and inclusion statements, to determine how their overall presentation across multiple platforms connect with social justice. I will do this be being at the leadership table in these major brands to assist their strategic development teams on the best ways to utilize digital & traditional media in creating branding campaigns that reach diverse audiences.
My Claim to Fame in college was always being the girl with a camera in her hand or a poem in her heart ready to tell any story!
Most Memorable Moment:
For the past two years at my Historically Black University in New Orleans, I was able to represent Black institutions to Fortune 500 companies as they sought to better understand how their products and content could best serve African American millennials and Generation Z. I was able to communicate issues surrounding my demographic, how we think about brands, and the workplace environment. Through the National Millennial and Generation Z community, I saw that without representation from diverse communities, major media and entertainment organizations and corporations are unable to understand the consumers they wish to reach and serve. This is why it is my passion to build a career that allows me to assist media companies to understand the types of strategy approaches that truly shifts them to become inclusive and diverse. This experience was a combination of several forms of training that I had in Mass Communication that helped me visualize the type of career that I would like to have as a strategic communications professional.
