About   (request update)
Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
The thought of entering highschool was a very exciting time for me in middle school. Near the end of my 8th grade school year I was accepted into Bishop Mcnamara Highschool which was my top choice private school I looked forward to attending. I wanted to play basketball for the freshman team at Bishop Mcnamara so I attended their summer camp workouts near the end of my 8th grade school year. The problem I faced as I attended these workouts was an injury on my knee that I sustained as I fell on my knee during the Bishop Mcnamara summer workouts I attended a year before. As a result of this injury, I had to get surgery done on my knee and I had to complete physical therapy which caused me to miss the opportunity to make the 8th grade basketball team. As I attended Bishop McNamara’s basketball workouts again at the end of my 8th grade school year I was shocked to still feel this pain in my knee considering that I have gotten surgery and completed physical therapy. I felt like this pain in my knee would never go away and that I would never be able to run again for the rest of my life.
I decided to stop going to these basketball workouts because of the pain I kept feeling in my knee and my mom took me to get surgery on my knee again in the summer. Before I got surgery on my knee for the second time I became depressed about the state that my knee was in. I felt like I would never have a normal highschool year because I was unable to play sports like everybody else. I thought I would not fit in with other people because I would be one of the few kids that did not play a sport. After I completed my surgery I had physical therapy for a couple of weeks but I had to stop attending it because it would be hard to make physical therapy appointments and deal with school at the same time. As school started I found myself making friends quickly despite not being a part of a sports team. I realized during my freshman year that there is more to the highschool experience than playing sports.
I was able to enjoy my freshman year at Bishop McNamara Highschool despite the fact that I was unable to play sports like I originally planned to. I accepted not being able to play sports for high school and I realized that I can still take care of my knee and enjoy athletic activities in the future. My surgeon who directed me to physical therapy was a young male and helped me figure out a solution to the problems I was facing with my knee. I was inspired by my surgeon who helped me with my knee injury and I gained an interest in sports medicine. I now look forward to having a career down the line as a sports medicine physician because I am passionate about helping young people with injuries that want to overcome their physical setbacks. As I look back at what I went through throughout my past few highschool years I realize that God was showing me signs through my knee injury that I can pursue a career in the future as a sports medicine physician. The experience of my knee being injured throughout highschool taught me that I can capitalize off of my pain I feel from my knee injury and that I am very passionate about helping other people through rehabilitation and pursuing a career as a sports medicine physician.
